I have the same problem, I know for sure that I used a dashboard that I found on the net to put it back in a 3944 (v.1.0) with success. I tried the same one on a 4034 and didn't work (v1.0) (xbox need service, error 21). So I'm guessing that it's related to the Bios version only.
Though someone else told me it have to do with a "key" located on the hard drive itself and refer to other files on the drive.

Can someone else help us more ?
