640x480 Is To Big For My Tv. Is This Standard?
« on: June 30, 2004, 06:11:00 PM »

Is 640x480 the standard size for Tv's? It's to big for mine, I have an Magnavox 27 inch about 8 years old. I am makeing a skin and I want it to look right on other peoples TV's, so should I keep to the 640x480 format?

Thanks,

ya, most tv's will do that, apparently flat screen tv's dont, You have to make the skin 640x480 but try to make it so the skin fits properly inside your tv. Others will be close to it anyway.

I've got a Broksonic 19" about 4 years old. Mine gets cut off a little bit also. No Alot tho. But the Big Screen in my living room is a Toshiba about 14-15 years old and 36" I think and Its a whole unit with the speakers and shit on the sides and that one gets cut off ALOT. My skin cut cut off about 20% on the top!

yes keep the 640x480 format.   its what mxm uses.

by rule, you should allow for 20-30 pixel overscan on all 4 sides.  this is a default for video producers, dvd's, anything dealing with tv display because of it.

i use this as an overlay in photoshop to show me where "not" to go...with the exception of filling it out to the edges.

That's cool. I think I will bring out the size a little so it won't be any gaps on other peoples TV's.

I need to have my game menu fit in this xbox I have but some of the titles won't fit in. I tried word wrap but couldn't it to work. I also tried Justifying X Y and center but couldn't get the text to shrink up smaller to fit in ethier. How can I make the text automatically resize to fit in the box I made?

Thanks,

.....it's called overscan and most tvs have it
has nothing to do with resolution as it fits to tv even if you can't see it all
only way to fix is adjust it via menu if really nice tv or open tv up and adjust the knobs to reduce the amount of overscan
