I use Macromedia Fireworks to create semi-transparent overlays.. And just save them as standard PNG files.

Seems a lot easier than what you guys are doing.

PNG in MXM only supports 0% or 100% transperancy.  So, something with 80% transperancy, shows up as 100% opaqe.  That's why we have to use DDS.

Thats the way I would have prefered to do it.

Well without DDS I could not get semi-transparent png's to work. Only if the area i wanted transparent was 100%.  I tried but photoshop and fireworks, but only the DDS files would look right.  It might've just been an old issue with 0.9n3 and earlier that is not an issue 0.9n4.

If 0.9n4 is rendering semi-transparent pngs properly now, DDS might not be needed unless there is an advantage to using them. That would probably be a question better left for BJ.

you know the old saying "if its not broke, dont fix it"... thats why i am still using DDS.

** you beat me thetruethugg .. I took too long to type it out.

well thats great to know, thanks.  I guess i should have tried it once i got my hands on 0.9n4

pre-0.9n4 wouldnt handle them properly..trust me.  I still got dents in my skull from the desk trying to make it work.

BJ, is there a memory-usage advantage to using a DDS over a PNG when larger sized overlays are used? (ie.. Livewire 2.o) or is it consitant no matter the file type?

DDS should be more efficient, since they are stored as DXT compressed files. I'm not sure exactly about the surface memory allocation, though, but presumably DirectX uses less memory on these types of surfaces.

Variable transparency PNGs probably will work in .4, since I fixed the alpha issues. wink.gif

Hmmm... back at my old office, and I don't have the files handy, but you can change all of that with tags in the menu element node. There is nothing in the skinner's guide?

If this is an MXM style Menu, use <OffsetY> in the primary and secondary nodes to adjust the spacing.

Besides that, you can <JustifyX> left, center or right.

Here's a link to the PDF file.   Obviously you need adobe acrobat reader.   Hope its understandable and easy to follow for everyone.

I will post to AXS when we come back and any tutorial sites are welcome to use it also...if you desire to.

Creating DDS overlays for MXM Skins

If its not good enough.. or i left something out.  Or its too hard to follow/understand.  Let me know.
