Yeah, I need to know this too, so I can put vid previews on my HD games.  I had gotten a bunch of game trailers of the net and half of them locked up my box when the preview tried to load itself.

MXM won't play WMV9 videos - they must be converted to avi.  Then they can be re-encoded in wmv8.  If you search you will find in many posts BJ talking about if the size of the video is 256X192 it takes half as much memory as a video larger say 320X240...

I use Winmpg to convert from wmv to avi (divx codec) then I use MGI Video Wave to edit the video how I like it.  Then I use WM8 Encoder Utility to put it into 256X192...  

I do believe the free or trial version of Winmpg will convert wmv to avi without putting their logo onto the video.  Then you can use VirtualDub to do any editing.  The use WM8 Encoder Utility....

Another thing you can do with the WM9 videos is use the WMV8 Encoder.  Just download the prog from here.

Open "Windows Media Encoder" and
Select broadcast, capture, or convert a file using the New Session Wizard]
Press OK
Select [Convert an audio or video file into a Windows Media file]
Press Next, Now on this window
IN [File to convert:] choose the movie you want to convert
IN [File to Create:] Choose where to save it and Name of Movie you will make
Press [NEXT]
Select [File will stream from a Web server or play directly on a computer]
Press [NEXT]
[What profile do you want to use?]
- Select "High motion video for broadband NTSC (1500 Kbps total)
If you see that it Lags or has choppy sound on your MXM menu use
A different format or a lower kbps, Make a couple of tests before you
Convert all your videos to a Profile

Finally Click [FINISH]

That way is a good quick way to convert the WM9 movies.  Good luck.
