Wmv Windows Media 9.0
« on: October 30, 2003, 03:03:00 PM »

I've burned two DVD's recently where the WMV preview appears to lock up MXM (Voodoo Vince and Grabbed by the Ghoulies), so I'm assuming it is because the video is Windows Media 9.0. Does anyone know how to tell if a video is 9.0 or not?

p.s. I've been getting them from here:

More than likely they are.

You can look att he properties in Windows Media Player, or use G-Spot to examine the codecs used (G-Spot is a great tool, anyway, since it helps you track down unknown codecs for your PC)

I plan on posting an "Unsupported Format" image soon for images that aren't kosher, but the WMV format is a bit convoluted and it will take a bit of time to sort it out.

I can tell you for sure that grabbed by the ghoulies from there is wmv9 ;-)
I had a dvd lock up too...

Slap that puppy (the video that is) into stoik and convert it.... you can save ALOT of space and get MXM compatible videos within a few minutes of time... great tool..

BJ, thanks for the heads up on G-Spot.

Looking at it again this morning, G-Spot requires you to render the video file using DirectShow, then displays the WMA and WMV version numbers - but what we refer to as WMV9 is ACTUALLY WMV3 (thanks Micro$oft!!) and WMV8 is actually WMV - of course, after looking at the ASF specifications, I see that this is indeed how the video and audio are reported.

It won't be in this version, but in the next, I will have better protection against bad video formats, as I'll parse through the file and locate the version of WMV as a pre-usage check.

BTW The game is still good if the menu doesn't work. Just boot up into EvoX, run FlashFXP, browse to the game directory and use the Command (Raw Commands): execute default.xbe

Bah.. I like all my games to come up through menu! ;-)
But for testing it, I just ran boxplorer to run the default.xbe... ;-)

I WILL have to give STOIK a try.. I ended up using a cover shot instead of the movie, since every grabbed by the goulies trailer was WMV9 ;-)
