Hmmmm... well, I don't know of a clean way of doing it otherwise. I monitor the XBox's PIC controller, which maintains the DVD drive's status (likely using that yellow cable connection).  

Perhaps Team Ava will release their library of low-level IDE code to PD (or at least consider sending some my way, as we have discussed it in the past)
