6y120l0 Maxtor 120gig
« on: June 25, 2003, 06:16:00 AM »

My friend recently got a 6Y120L0 (Maxtor 120gig 7200rpm, 2mb Cache) Hard Drive in his Premodded Xbox. I have been meaning to upgrade my 40gig for some time. He brought his round and I foud that the acesss noise (when seeking a new file or creating one) is very loud, does anyone else have experience with this hard drive, being noisy/not? The Hard Drive cannot be fragmented as it was basically a bare install when I saw it.

Thanks all

I've got that drive, its pretty quiet but it does heat up a lil, you might want to install an extra fan or at least not leave your xbox on overnight.

Other than that its fine, and its lockable too

Maybe it was just my mates drive, I will ask at the store if it is noisy. I dont mean noisy as in ambient, as in the noise it makes when acessing; the clicking noise when accessing new files and creating them (you can tell when it does this if you install a game with hddloader and there are lots of small files, there is them more crunhing noise. The Ambient noise is very low, I prob will stick a fan on

I mean the Hard Drive noise, the crunching sound, not very nice, when the Hard Drive is finding files it isnt to do with the GPu fan. Surely your Pc hard Drive must make the same noise, every one I have seen does, it is just it was very prominent. Maybehe got a duff one, If you are saing that it does not make this noise then it looks like I will be getting this hard drive. Is there any loud noise (from the Hard Drive, the crunching sound) when you rip a game onto your HD?

I have the 6Y120P0, which is the 8MB cache version. The accessing noice is very very low, infact i can hardly hear it, but then its to be expected from a HDD to have some access noise. This drive doesnt get hot either, or atleast mine doesnt and its basically running 24/7, but as i have it running such long times i stuck a cooling fan under the HDD, but it was always running pretty cool before i put the extra fan on. I doubt your friend has a duff drive, more likely its getting fragmented, just wait till the next major release of avalaunch comes out. I beleive that version should have the defrag tool in.

Thanks MikeJf for that; I dont know wether or not to tell my friend, because he got a premodded. What use is it haing a low ambient noise when it seeks it sounds like rain on glass and like it is thrashing. So this drive is a thumbs up all round. I Will probably get it tomorrow. I have allways used WD's before, but Maxtor is in the same league and thisb drive looks very good.

Thanks All

I got the same maxtor hd in my xbox and its not noisy at all, you can't even tell the difference from the stock seagate that came with it. The only diff is that it does get alittle hotter than the original so I'm planning on increasing the original fan to 12v. to keep it cool.

I have just installed it and the idle noise is very low, but there is quite a lot of access noise, it cant be fragmented because I just inmstalled it but I will defrag when tghe avalaunch defragger comes out.

I am pretty pissed off with this drive, the noise it makes is unbearable, does anyone have any ideas, as it cant be fragmented and there have been at least two drives with this problem, have I done anything wrong??

You're starting to become a whinging pain in the arse  dry.gif So yours makes abit of noise, get over it! Its only caching the game files, wait till theyve cached and you wont need worry about noise again if its a regularly played game by you. But first time caching of a recent game will make abit of accessing noise.
