There's a known bug in xboxhdm where it makes shadowc.img read only, and it sounds as though that's what's happened here. Boot with Frosty's Rescue Disc, delete C:\shadowc.img from your Xbox, then ftp a clean copy back again. If you don't have a clean copy, just ftp shadowc.img to your PC before you delete it, check its permissions, then ftp it back. When you reboot it should be writeable.

If you want to run the MS dash to change video settings then what you are doing won't work because of the virtual eeprom. To do that you need to boot with Frosty's rescue disc, then run C:\msdash.xbe or C:\msxboxdash.xbe.

It sounds as though your softmod might not have installed properly in the first place - if it had it would have copied your original C back to the shadow C in the first place when you installed the softmod on the original disk. You might want to think about upgrading your softmod to a later version.

Kingroach NDURE 3.1 is the best softmod for copying directly to a disk with ftp, and you don't need to format the drive to use it. Download it and have a look at the manual (pdf file) - it's fairly straightforward. To install it you boot with Frosty's Rescue disc (to bypass shadow C), erase the files on the C partition, copy the Kingroach C files across, and also copy the Kingroach E files to E - no need to erase any files from E. Your apps, backed up games and gamesaves are untouched. There's a Kingroach thread here.

Sounds as though you didn't build the Kingroach files on top of the stock C 5960 MS Dash. Best place to get a clean copy is from Slayers or Cash. The picture in paragraph 4 of the Kingroach manual shows it far better than I can explain it! Rebuild the files, reboot with Frosty's, clear the C and copy the new files across.

Once it reboots your Shadow C should be empty, and you should be able to ftp another clean copy of the stock C to the shadow C, then launching MS Dash from UnleashX or via the eject button should work.

Hey man, just wanted to thank you for all your help. Everything is up and running as it should be now. Unfortunately, I've filled my hard drive up with games and emulators, and I think I will need to back up everything and install a bigger HDD.......lol
