1. Turn the X2 off and try to cold boot Splinter Cell.
2. Try the other bank of the X2 - there may be a different BIOS on it!

Sorry for the stupid questions.....by X2 i assume u mean Xecuter2? how do I turn it off? what do you mean by 'the other bank of the X2'?
Cheers

Yes, Xecuter 2.

The Xecuter 2 has two banks of 512k flash, so it can hold two BIOSes at the same time. You select the banks and turn the chip on and off using the set of 3 switches connected to the chip - they are labelled, and the chip won't work without them, so you must have them!

Did you change the master / slave jumpers on the drive? While you've got the Xbox apart just check - they should be set to master - there'll be a picture on the drive to guide you!

The chip is under the DVD.

I'd say the odds were 50:50 that there's no chip in there - most chip installers would put the switches on the outside of the box - or that it's not an Xecuter 2...........

There's a quick way to check. The X2 has a bright blue LED on it that's always on if you have power to the box, and you can see a reflected glow through the vents on the left hand side of the Xbox as you look at it from the front. Not that it makes any difference - you need to take the Xbox apart anyway, it will just ease you in to the potential disappointment!!

And, no - if you do have an X2 then you don't just turn all the switches off - you read the labels and flick the appropriate switches to achieve the desired effect as described above..... rolleyes.gif

I'm fairly certain that the drive should be set to master, but I have drives set to cable select that also work. It would be worth a quick try - changing the jumpers and rebooting to see if you can get to a dash or error 13.

Either way, it sounds like your box is TSOP flashed or softmodded. Out of interest, why did you think you had an Xecuter 2?

I suspect that your HD is broken.

Disconnect it, boot up your Xbox, and see what error message you get. It's almost certain to be 07 or 08, but either way it will prove that the BIOS is working, and point the finger squarely at your HD.

If you'd mentioned removing the HD sooner (=possibility of damage) we might have got here a bit quicker.........

Yep. that worked. Got the error "07 - Your XBOX requires service. Please call XBOX Customer Support". So what can I do now? Obviously I need to obtain a new hd. I have plenty of computer IDE HD's lying around. will they be compatible?

I still don't understand how the hd is the problem considering it was working fine until I copied across the wrong file. And what is the deal with the X2? Do I have one?
Next step...
Thanks for your help

No, you don't have an X2. As you didn't find a chip then your box is almost certainly TSOP flashed.

That's good news, because it means that the next step should be really easy. Take a spare IDE drive, set it to master, and plug it in to your Xbox. Cold boot your Xbox with your boot disc in, and it should load. As you don't need to lock it any IDE disc should work.

Now, get a copy of Slayers and burn it to a DVD-R. Read the manual that comes with it. Cold boot your Xbox with the Slayers boot disc, and follow the instructions for option 3 - New Install / Full Rebuild.

Ok I've got Slayers. Do I burn it as a XISO or just an ISO? To a CD-RW (with a dummy file) or a DVD-R or a DVD-RW? Is there a strong chance that the xbox will only accept certain hd types? Or are they known to be compatible with all hd's? Please help.

Burn the iso using an iso burning tool - DVD Decrypter definitely works. Use DVD-R as it seems to be the most compatible across the various Xbox DVD drives.

Only certain HDs will lock, but you don't need to lock yours, so that isn't an issue.

Ok. I've tried Slayer Auto Installer 2.7 on a Memorex DVD-R and the Verbatim DVD-RW (this worked when I booted EvolutionX before I stuffed my xbox) and neither of them work. I've tried setting the hd to master and cable select but still no luck. I keep getting the Error 16. The Slayer PDF says this for error 16:

"Dashboard: Other files to do with dashboard/dashboard settings (specific dashboard error).

Any ideas? Please help...feels like we're really close to the end!

OK. So it looks as if you've got an old X2 BIOS that doesn't skip the clock check. That's awkward, but probably fixable. I'm now flying blind (never had this problem, all my BIOSes skip the clock check).

Try this: Use xboxhdm with the stock C files from Slayers (in SYSTEM\ALL\c ) and xboxhdm to make your new HD into a stock c drive, but unlocked. Put that in your xbox, and it should boot to the MSdash, and ask you to set the clock..... hopefully!
