Ok, I posted a similar question in the wrong topic, so this should be appropriate (I hope). Short story: I changed .xbe's and lost FTP access. I need FTP access to change them back.

Long story:

I recently got a free modded unit with the pink EVOX logo, so I know it's a hard mod (and that's about all I know). I went to upgrade the XBMC to 2.x and put it as the dash by following the instructions on the XBMC site. After, the unit wouldn't boot to any dash (EVOX or M$) and I was locked out of the FTP. I'm now pretty sure I fat fingered the rename of the dash with a typo so that's what I need to fix. I tried loading a game after this failure and the games work fine, but when ejecting no Dash loaded.

Today I tried creating a new dash ISO and burned it to a DVD+R. The xbox said it couldn't read the file, but when I took the disc out it went to the standard dash. I explored the dash and it's still showing XBMC under the applications, and it's giving me the same IP address as I used yesterday. So at least I have dashboard access to something now, but its nothing useful.

The box says it is on the network, it's giving me an IP and whatnot, but my FTP can't access it still.

Any ideas how I can just get in to the hard drive to change the name on the dash .xbe file?

Build a CD with Slayer's on it. It should give you FTP access.

If it helps, xbox dvd rom drive are particular over the media they read. Try DVD-R (minus) followed by CDRW. Frosty's xbox rescue disc is a smaller download. It's also an EvoX boot disc that should give ftp access.

I think I had the same problem. This is my story...any ideas?
I recently installed evolution x on my modded xbox (xecuter2) and was trying to install XMBC as a dashboard. I found a site which gave me these instructions (http://xbmc.org/wiki/?title=As_a_Dashboard) and I got to the last step where I replaced my evolution xbox dash file (xboxdash.xbe) with the default one I downloaded from this site and I made the file xboxdash.cfg with notepad. However, I made the mistake in saving the file as 'xboxbash.cfg.txt' so when I copied the 2 files across via FTP and rebooted, it now doesn't go past the first screen. I'm assuming coz the cfg.txt file should be *.cfg. So now i'm asking, how do I get back to being able to FTP my xbox or getting it back to the evolutionX dashboard!? I backed up my C and E drive before I started with evolutionX. Is this helpful? Please help me.

Sorry....the page must have an error. didn't see the post. so u recommend the frosty xbox rescue disc? i've googled it to try and find a place to download it, and found it will only work for xbox v1.0 not v1.6. is that correct? how do I know what version my xbox is? sorry for the silly questions....im new to this stuff.

You can use any boot disc - in general Frosty's or Slayers or AID or CASH should all work.

Frosty's probably doesn't work on a 1.6 - but I can't check 'cos I'm not at home.

This will help you work out your Xbox version.

Use this to help you get the boot disc images.

Just burn the disc and cold boot your xbox with the disc in the drive, and you'll have ftp access.

Thanks for the post. Helped me out and found the file without any problems. I burned the iso to a DVD-RW as this was the same cd that my xbox booted evolutionX from when i installed it. However, the xbox still doesn't go past the start screen as it doesn't seem to recognise the disc. does this iso only work with DVD-R or CD-RW? what do you recommend i do? Thanks again

DVD-R seems to work best for most people - it certainly works 100% in all of mine. I found that DVD-RW was extremely unreliable.

Yes, cold boot is starting the box with a DVD already in the drive.

I couldn't find any of the brands recommended here, so I used the DVD-R I could get my hands on in the local supermarket - Pleomax (Samsung) and Verbatim. Both work perfectly in Samsung, Philips and Thomson drives. I'd suggest you use whatever you can find that looks like a reasonable brand that you've heard of. Consensus here seems to be to burn at 2.4 or 4x, and it worked for me.

question...once i get the rescue disc to work and i have FTP access, can i just copy my backup files onto the xbox hard drive to put it back to normal or fix the *.cfg file that i named *.cfg.txt by accident?? in other words can i do what i like, or is there some particular backup method i should follow to make the dashboard work again?

You only need to copy the file you misnamed. Just ftp in and rename the .cfg.txt file to .cfg, or copy the correctly named one across.

OK. I've tried 2 different DVD-R's (LG and Macromedia) and no luck. As I said before my DVD-RW didn't work and the CD-R and CD-RW's are too small for the image file. The xbox stops on the "XBOX" screen and after a few seconds the text "XECUTER2" pops up at the bottom. This is where it stops but im not sure if its just stopping or if its actually freezing. If its freezing will this cause the rescue disc not to work? Will the rescue disc work no matter what settings were entered when the evolutionX dashboard was working? e.g. boot from cd (yes/no).
Do you suggest I keep trying different DVD-R media brands?

Vary the 10000 accordingly to the CD-RW size. This will create the dummy file with the right size for CDRW.

Yes, if the rescue disc works, the menu will appear.

Hmmmm..

If it's not booting a genuine game then it won't boot homebrew. Either your DVD drive is broken, or your BIOS is configured to not look for d:\default.xbe when it boots.

Which BIOS are you using? Do you have a different BIOS on the other bank of your X2?
