I am at the stage where you use the boot disk to enable a ftp connection, but when i try to connect directly via laptop it says 'no link' on my dash, and my laptop says that the cable is unplugged when clearly not. I tested the connection with my pc and it works fine, so i know that it is not the cable.

How can i get the connection to work with my laptop NIC?
My NIC works fine as to any other connection, dunno why its not working now...

It is a cross over cable for direct connection yeah?  
put the cable ends side by side and see if the order of colour is different of the wires

now that I got that out of the way, is there any software that you are using on the laptop that could block the connection? ( ip manager on LG laptops)

disable anything like that and try it....

if it doesn't work your on your own, sorry....
