I have finally purchased a widescreen HDTV ready monitor.  I bought a Toshiba 30HFX84 CRT and it is now sitting in my living room.  The only downside is that the thing is about 150 lbs.  So far, it is great for watching TV.  I have calibrated it using the Digital Video Essentials DVD and the picture in my living room is amazing.  I can't believe I have waited this long to do this.

My XBOX is connected to the television using S-Video.  I have set the aspect ratio in the MS Dash to 16:9 and Evolution-X boots up in 16:9 mode.  I'm not sure what version of the MS Dashboard I have.  I never turn off the mod chip and I always boot to EvolutionX 3935 first.  I do know that when I run the MS Dash, when I test my connection it thinks the box is not connected to the wired ethernet, even though it is.  Yet EvolutionX uses the ethernet no problems and so does Avalaunch for that matter.  Needless to say, I cannot get an MS Dash update from MS because of this.  I have an unmodified XBOX I use for XBOX Live.

Maybe I don't have any XBOX games that support widescreen, I have: Superman, Mech Assault, SSX 3, Splashdown, BG - Dark Alliance, Fable, Enclave, Ninja Gaiden, Mortal Kombat Deception, etc (admittedly, I haven't tried all of these games yet.)  However, I have tried SSX3 and Dark Alliance and neither came up in widescreen.  Also, none of the emulators XSNES, MAMEoX, ect seem to support widescreen.  Avalaunch supports widescreen and I have enabled it for XBMC too.

I haven't tried any of the homebrew games yet.

So, what am I doing wrong with the XBOX retail games and with the emulators?  Can I enable widescreen for these too?

Uh, most games support widescreen. The link in my siq will give you more info.  If you TV is HDTV capable I suggest you get the component video connectors for your XBOX.

Still, you should be getting widescreen just fine the way you are doing it.  Are you sure the games aren't in widescreen, and you just have to change the aspect ratio on your TV?  For example, when I put a widescreen DVD in my DVD player, my TV doesn't automatically know it's widescreen, it just sees that it is 480p.  However, you can tell everything looks narrower than it should.  Then I hit the "wide" button on my remote to change it to "standard" wide mode (not a stretch mode).  Works the same for my XBOX too. <

Not that it would solve your WS problem, but you can't get a network update because you're booting with the modchip on, and the hacked bios you're loading is blocking Xbox Live.

Turn off your modchip (your HDD must be locked for the Xbox to boot w/the modchip off) and then try to connect to Live. It should work now. <

Yeah... what do I know?  

I have never booted this particular XBOX with the chip off and I have never locked the hard disk on it.  I have a separate unmodified XBOX for XBOX Live and so it's never been an issue for me.    I have a third (second modified) XBOX with the latest version of the MS Dash on it, and will most likely steal the dash from that eventually and put it on this one.

And, the widescreen problem is solved too.  I'm a real HDTV newbie and didn't realize that I had to put the TV itself in 16:9 mode when it switches back to 4:3.

I feel dumb.
