New Version of Slayer's Install Disc Coming
« Reply #15 on: April 23, 2006, 05:11:00 AM »

When I first came to these forums and knew nothing at all about modding I was simply looking for a way to play my dvd's without the m$ remote and I got drawn into this whole modding world.

Back then I knew nothing at all about any of it and even after reading threads and guides I was still none the wiser but I managed to get the my chip installed and flashed with the help of XS and then I used Slayers disc - Without something like that back then in april 2004 I would never have got anything on my xbox, well I would have done eventually but I would had to have read about installing dash's and then choosing the right one for me and then about installing apps, etc, etc.

I know there are a lotta ppl that knock these auto-installers and don't think they should be used but I think they are wrong, Slayers and others are perfect for the newbie's and it gives them a working modded xbox which they can then learn and adapt to their own liking.

I always used to reccoment using SLayers to any of the newbie's I used to help in the forums and always got a lot of positive response's back from them once it had all been done and working.

So keep up the good work Slayer and all the other installers and nice to see you around again.

You would be suprised how many threads appear of people in the newbie section saying there backups dont work, due to using outdated apps from slayers. From this point, i would recommend auto installer 3.0, djb did a great job, and it is a very clean installer. Slayers was a great autoinstaller, and still is, but i wouldnt recommend it due to it being so outdated. Cant wait for 2.7 though.

UnleashX on a disk is good enough for prepping hard drives, you shouldn't need one of these disks.

That's exactly how I have got modded boxes up and going, with the UnleashX Boot Disc to prep the hard drive and then FTP everything over.  I save drive folders on my PC with the most updated stuff and then FTP it over.  Still, for those that Slayer's have helped, they are very gracious for his labor.

But before I made the UnleashX disc, I was using raw commands on FTP to format the hard drive - talk about a pain in the butt, ah the good old days...

Thanks for the kind comment smile.gif

I do have to agree too, when Slayer 2.6 was released, it was one of the best there was for installers, but a lot has changed now in it's 2 year absence. Basically I've been working my ass off and preparing an all-new system in the same amount of the time between the release of Slayer 2.6, and now (after I just released v3.01) and I've created my system to be the most flexible, and hopefully the most easiest-to-use.

However, I still must give credit where it's due, if it wasn't originally for Slayers, I wouldn't have never known how an autoinstaller worked. For about 5 months or so I just wrote a Evox installer-type system, which was very close to Slayers except slightly modified and more current. It wasn't until my v1 of A.I.D. came out that I really decided to break my learning mould and started to try and reach the possible limits of what an autoinstaller can do with a nice new engine (UnleashX that is).

I really hope that Slayer and mholgate step up to the plate, and knock our socks off with their 2.7 release, it's been a long time coming and most of your XS members are dying for an update. I too show interest to see what you guys end up doing with it, since it's basically our two installers are the only ones ppl use these days.

Regards,
DJB

Hi DJB!  I am glad that SlaYers has inspired you and many others to create installers and automate a tedious process.  Though I coined the term "Auto-Installer" I see it used everywhere now and it makes me happy to see that people have been driven to help others with their own creative versions.

Oh, I guess no one bothered to read that v2.7 will not knock anyone's socks off laugh.gif as it is only a "refresher" update with just ONE new feature.  This is not due to lack of ideas or creativity on my part or the rest of the team, it simply has to do with lack of time to dedicate to a new project.  Not only am I time constrainted, but our team has been as well.

I was really hoping to release a full new version using custom code instead of EvoX or UnleashX, but alas there have been other greater priorities in my life in the past year or so.  I only agreed to do an update to v2.6 because people were asking for it like crazy and mholgate stepped up to the plate and is helping like mad.

Hopefully by the time XBox 360 mods come out, it will be inspiration enough for a lot of new and smart folks who also are blased with some time on their hands to join our team and help make the new installer a reality.

I wish you the best with your installer and I am happy to see that you've continued the great tradition of exploration and pushing the limits of xbox scripting.

I'm at a similar situation myself with my installer, there's not much I can do now, so basically I just tie up loose ends and release update packs. Just like yourself, I'm waiting for the 360 mods / homebrew, just filling in my time whilst that happens smile.gif

I also think it'd be best to just wait for XBMC 2 and the blackbolt skin coming out. Although, i could less about what software i give people after doing mods.

Problem with "waiting" for XBMC v2.0 is two fold:

1) We do not know when that will be... it could be months!

2) A new release of any software that complex usually has bugs so it's best not to dive right in and assume all is 100%... if you then wait for fixes, you're back at the waiting game.

We have to draw a line, grab one of the new CSV releases, test it as best we can, and go for it.  People can update it later via FTP at will.

Yes, I've known what it's like too to be waiting on something for a release, f.e. the Blackbolt MC360 skin. I originally delayed my A.I.D. v3.01 update pack for this, only to be disappointed when it wasn't released on the original deadline date.

A small tip for you Slayer, instead of grabbing a raw CSV and compiling, just grab the most current T3CH or PIMPED build of XBMC and use that. I used to compile them myself but I dont bother these days, I'd rather just grabbed decent pre-compiled ones, throw in some skins + scripts, and there you go.

On a side-note about XBMC 2, hopefully it shouldn't be too far off you would think. Considering newer builds have now enforced the v2.0 Skinning standard (something to remember when looking for skins too), the rest of XBMC 2 cant be too far off.

on a side note... do you know what version of dvd2xbox 2.7 will include ?

Obviously I can't talk for slayer, but I'd assume he'd use the most current version avaiable when it comes time for release.

The most current but more importantly the most stable version.  I'd rather step one or 2 versions back if it ensures that an app is compatible with the rest of the main apps and works as it should. What people do after that is their business but my stuff better work.

SlaYer's was made famous not just by the fact that it was there 1st, but by the fact that it was fully tested for app interopearability on multiple platforms and different mod chips to ensure a smooth product.  I'd like to keep it that way, even with an update like v2.7

Looking back the only real problem people had was never with the installer, but with the fact that the xbox's three different DVD drives over the course of 6 different versions were all horrible at reading media.  Unless you burn to a good DVD-R in full mode and slow you're going to have intermittent success.

We have a good developer/tester now, mholgate and since he is is AU we can test NTSC as much as PAL to make v2.7 another global release :-)

For reference I can tell you that we're in BETA5 atm and things are looking good....

Anyway, thank you all for your kind words of support!

Thanks for the update Slayer smile.gif

I did similar testing with Auto-Installer Deluxe, as I live in AU (testing the PAL side of things) where most if not all my testers were from the US.

So, beta 5 hey? Sounds like you're making some progress, that is good news. Not meaning to push in any way, but do you have a clue (or even just a rough estimate) on when you think that 2.7 will be released?

Keep up the good work !!
