New Version of Slayer's Install Disc Coming-- Posted by XanTium on April 22 17:24 EST
Slayer announced a new version of the popular SlaYers EvoX Auto-Installer (a CD that allows you to easily setup your Xbox and install many homebrew programs) will be released. From slayer.xbox-scene.com:

I was reluctant to work on a new version (even an update) as I have 0 free time, but with help from our newest member, mholgate, it looks like v2.7 will materialize very soon. We've created a private Beta Testing thread and things look promising. The next update posted here will be the release info and I think everyone will be pleasently surprised...

yeah, you might aswell rewrite the entire installer to be honest. Im writing an unleashx installer at the mo, its going well, its so easy, just takes so much time. The worst is when u lose count of how many </list>'s i need, from now on im making a list and /list before putting anything in. Nice news, never was a fan of the old slayer, however for a newbie based installer its great.

I still use Slayers for prepping new hard drives, though I then immediately nuke the F drive and drag over my own preconfigured setup.

Maybe this new version will finally convince me to leave it to an autoinstaller again.

Honestly I much rather use a certain other up-to-date unleashx installer, it works pretty well for me, I've been using those versions for a while and they are pretty much constantly updated with the latest homebrew apps.

But I mean that's why multiple people make different installers, everyone has their favorite drinks, favorite foods, etc it's all about choice.

I'm curious to see what the upgrades are gonna be, considering that Slayer has now got someone else helping out. Hopefully it means some freshness to an old classic.

Since it's been nearly 2 years (Sept 2004 if I remember correctly) since the 2.6 release it's going to be interesting, since this is the period when my Auto Installer Deluxe has really tried to push the limit with what is possible with an auto-installer.

I have to agree with .:Dino:. and Sjohn that the Evox system is now very outdated for scripting, and a newer interface like UnleashX should be used. It's just a shame that UnleashX doesnt have the hdd lock/unlock, and eeprom tools (c'mon UnleashX developers if you read this hehe) but ofcourse you can always use evox extrernally for these if desired.

I hope to see a kick-ass 2.7 release from you guys, as I know that you guys can do it. Don't let us down smile.gif

BTW, it would be nice if we could get some more information about what exactly is going to be upgraded / added to the system, as I'm sure a lot of your members would be interested to know...

uhm yeah slayers being news? lately xs has been posting garbage.
slayers is like too many years to late to make a worthwhile difference. even releasing a new one, people are still just gonna end up with 2.6 cause half the people who want slayers have to use p2p to get it. SLAYERS_2.7_XBMC_AUTOINSTALLER_NO_VUIRUSS'S.exe.tif i can see it all now

ive got an idea that would own slayers. someone code an unleashx installer that will format/etc get the hdd working. install a dash, and then have a hidden irc/ftp interface thatll automatically connect to xbins and download the LATEST apps/emus/etc, unzip them and install them. would put any auto installer to shame smile.gif

did i mention auto installers are lame? the least a person can do is learn how to setup a dash on their own and then ftp over the latest shit they want rather then some old crap on the installer

Well it is good to see that there are still fans of SlaYer's who appreciate all the hard work and countless man hours of testing and tweaking that have gone into making this free tool.  To you all I say: thank you for your support and kind words!

We also seem to have the folks who think that it's not needed and they can do everything by hand or through their own scripts, to you I say: More power to you! But do not bash something that has helped so many people enjoy their Xbox when they were overwhelmed by the difficulty of obtaining apps and not knowing how they interact with each other. It is true the installer is "hard to find" but there is a reason for that, and you know it well.

Anyway, in case no-one bothered to look at the home page of our site, v2.7 will still be based on EvoX, be just a refresher (newest apps, tools & bioses) but it will have ONE new feature people have been asking for a lot in our forums.  That feature is not public knowledge for now as we must ensure that it works properly 1st.  It is nothing amazing, so do not get too excited, but I think it will make a nice enhancement.

Since the installer is meant for the original Xbox, and since the Xbox 360 is still a little far away from homebrew software, releasing the installer based on a new dash (like UnleashX) makes no sense as there is no other functionality you'd gain.  The testing cycle to ensure the new scripts work flawlessly take a lot of time and honestly I do not have any these days. There are other installers out there who do some amazing things and I was not going to update 2.6 but I kept getting countless PM's and emails asking me to, so I am just replying in kind.

The auto-download/update is a neat idea I had myself over 2 years ago, but implementing and maintaining it when all the apps are "underground" on unreliable and uncertain servers with the law always cracking down, and with hosts not getting anything out of their efforts, would make this a very unreliable system.   If the apps were all legal and there was some sort of subsidy for the bandwidth used by the tens of thousands of downloads, be assured I would have implemented this years ago.  I would really hate to release something that works great for a week and then becomes utterly useless since it cannot update itself.

Anyway, no one is forcing you to look for, download or use the installer, and if you do not think it makes worthwhile news, feel free to write something yourself that does!

Meantime we thank XanTium for his continued support, gracious hosting of our site and the kind PR.

All the best to you all and Happy Modding!

Honestly when I first modded mine evox was a piece of cake granted I had to update everything and tweak things. I think its great its like having a model airplane. You can change things and whatever, I mean I change dashes like underwear and I always come back to evox sure its outdated but its simple, no xml file to change I dont neeed to learn python. I think alot of you forget that a large portion of us appreciate getting more from our xbox without a bs degree. I love it becase of the simplicity. /rant

That's great news, at least the apps will be updated.  I kind of wish they would wait until XBMC 2 comes out though.  Having an "unstable" build of XBMC on an autoinstaller just isn't a really good idea to me.  That also depends on how long XBMC 2 is until release.  XBMC, UnleashX, dvd2Xbox, and some emulators are the only things that have been updated.  Evox itself is dead, XBMP has been long dead, as well as Avalaunch and many of the other apps that were on 2.6.  There's not much of an App Update needed.  I would rather see new features like a "softmod only" section on the disc.  Or at least warnings pertaining to softmods.  Too many people screw their softmods up by formatting drives or unlocking their hard drives.  You said yourself your autoinstaller is for "noobs", so give them a clear warning.  SlaYer's is great, I love the Retail C drive (5960 dash).  I just wish there was some more options.  Hmm, I might make my own UnleashX autoinstaller.
