Removing Evolutionx
« on: November 08, 2005, 07:13:00 PM »

hell everyone, new member here :)

I just bought an Xbox for $75 (yay!) and it has EvolutionX along with a whole bunch of other stuff on it (emu's and Xbox Media Center). I can also tell that the case has been opened so it's probably been chipped too.

From what I've read around the internet on how to install EvolutionX it seems like it's just mainly a replacement xbox dashboard that you just put on the xbox's HD. that's cool and all, but I want my xbox to be a normal one, with the normal M$ dashboard. I've looked through the HD using XMC and it seems that all the correct original Xbox files were backed up onto C in folders. I even tried launching the orignal dashboard from XMC but I get the call service screen with an error code of 21.  And it'd be really great if the MS Dashboard option on EvoX's main menu actually launched the db but it just brings me back to evox (but that sounds like an evox.ini problem)

anyways... is there any way to restore my xbox to normal, or even just get the dashboard to run?

any help would be great. ask any questions and I'll try to answer them the best I can

Can you post the contents of your C:\ drive (not interested in the subdirectory contents just the names of all the files and directories you can see in XBMC file manager).

There might be a quick way to get the MS dash running, but I don't think you'd want to risk wiping the drive without knowing if it's chipped or not.

Put in Slayer's Evox Autoinstaller 2.6.  There is an option to rstore retail HDD.  Also, make sure your HDD is locked.  Finally, FTP to your C drive to ensure all MS files are there.  If they are, you can now remove the modchip and play normally.

What you did is just formatted, therefore deleted, everything on your HDD.  Then, you reinstalled things on the HDD so it is just like the HDD in a brand new Xbox.

check for the following files at root of C

xbox book.xtf

there should be some sub folders too. the main subfolders being

Neilor - about that file list - here ya go:

Folders
Audio
backup
fOnts
fonts
Skin
Trainers
xboxdashdata17F14DOO
xodash

Files
evox.ini
evoxdash.xbe
items.txt
Xbox Book.xtf
Xbox.xtf
xboxdash.xbe

*I made sure to be case sensitive*
Also I had another file, msxboxdash.xbe, in the root as well. But he's how it went. I looked up info on installing EvoX and learned that you were supposed to make a backup on the dash executable and name it something, and the sample they gave was msxboxdash.xbe. I also found more info on how the M$ dash can get corrupted if you have EvoX and that was when you used certain discs that contained updates that worked with Xbox Live!. The updates updated the dash executable, so i figured maybe the xbox was trying to boot the msxboxdash.xbe, which wasn't updated, and since the rest of the files were updated and the dash wasn't was *possibly* the reason the dash wasn't coming up. Well that did nothing to help me, because with that file gone, now when I launch xboxdash.xbe I don't even see an attempted launch. I just go straight back to EvoX. I used to get an attempted launch and then get error 21.
Also, I'm pretty confident that the xbox is chipped, but that should hinder me from having it behave like a normal xbox, right? Does the chip tell the xbox to look for different startup files or something? If that's the case I'd be glad just to have a runnin g dash that I can access through Evox or something. Well that's enough rambling.

I have some spare tech info that might help:

<< info taken from EvoX settings page>>
EvolutionX V+3935
my HD is locked
Free Space on C: 330MB
                      E: 2.1GB
                      X: 768MB
                      Y:768MB
                      Z: 768MB

--BIOS--
BIOS version              Unknown
Kernal version             1.005838.01
Xbox Hardware Info     00000650 D3 D5

That Slayers AutoInstaller sounds like a good idea to try first possibly. I could try to restore the HD to retail contents and if it works like a normal xbox then great. If not then I'd just install a nice clean copy of EvoX. And since both the EvoX and dash would be fresh copies then I should have no problems lauching the dash from EvoX.

feedback maybe?

Yes, as I suggested, use Slayers.  Xbox Soundtrack editor, I believe it is called, allows you to FTP music from your Xbox to PC or PC to Xbox to be played in-game.  However, once you get it to your PC, run Slayers to restore retail HDD, reboot with Slayers in, FTP music, reboot without Slayers in and you should have EVERYTHING but your music and bios as if the Xbox had just come off of the shelf.

ok. I downloaded a great auto-installer for dashboards and other great stuff from http://www.***********/ - and it really is an awesome installer - so i tried installing the MS dash and it installed it, restarted xbox and now it acts normal and goes to boot the MS dash automatically but i still get the 21 error. wtf. i don't know what files i'm missing, and at the same time i've got to find a good cd/dvd that the xbox will quickly boot off of be4 i get the 21 error. at this point i think i'll just install another dash seeing as how that seems to be easier.

the new question is is there a good dash out there that can manage game saves and maybe rip cds to use for custom soundtracks?

i'm still up for trying the Slayer's autoinstaller if that's any better than what i got - but i think what i downloaded is pretty comprehensive. can someone give me a link or link to a working torrent to download slayers?

It's against the rules to ask for a Slayers Disk torrent. You need to find it in the Usual Places. Yes, I know that's obtuse, but that's all anyone can say... look on the main site for a Usual Places tutorial.

Here is the X-S tutorial for the "Usual Places."
They have pretty much anything you could ever want for your Xbox.

sorry bought that. don't wanna cause trouble. ^_^;;

here's a good question though - if my xbox is hard modded and i wiped C: and reinstalled the M$ dash from slayers or another autoinstaller disk, would the mod chip trigger an error 21?

Error 21 -
QUOTE
21 - anywhere - This error says that the machine was booted to display a error, basically someone told the machine to reboot (or launch a xbe) with this flag, and the error code just means its been rebooted by the flag

[Details] With thanks to "bleugh"

This occurs frequently when the xbox is unable to boot due to dashboard changes being made (ie Gcue true blue hasnt been resigned, parts of the stock dash are missing - incomplete FTP backups copied to a new HDD for example).

No, you won't get Error 21.  Even if you do, your modchip will allow you to run Slayers again and redo everything.
