A Few Questions...
« on: December 27, 2004, 09:57:00 PM »

I was wondering if it would be worth it to get the HDTV pack (component video cables) on a non-HD enabled TV. I have a Sany o DS24424 which has component inputs, but isn't HD enabled. Will there be a noticable difference in picture quality?

Also, I'm wondering if it's possible to get hi-def on a computer monitor without an X2vga or VGA cable (I have a 1.6 Xbox and thus I can't use a VGA bios). I have an 18" LCD monitor (Gateway FPD1830) that I would like to use with my Xbox if I could get HDTV resolutions on it. TIA.

Also, I was wondering, if I (or a friend of mine rather) have a 1.0-1.5 Xbox that is softmodded, I can use a VGA bios right?

in reply to the component question, from my personal experience, i didnt notice too much of a difference. however i did not do a side by side vs the svideo i was using before. my tv is a Samsung 27" flat screen with component ins (but no HD). i really wanted to have component just to try it, so i'll be sticking with it anyway. i'll try to do a side by side when i get back home and let you know

Can you do component vs composite? I'm currently using composite right now. I figure I may as well go component since the advanced av pack costs as much as the HDTV pack.

Go component. It will give you better colour definition and you will find small text easier to read. You will notice a difference compared to composite. Compared to S-Video, it won't be that much different.

Ok Thanks, I think I might go ahead and do that.

Also, does anyone know if I could get the MS HDTV pack, a component to VGA cable, and conect it to a sync on green capable monitor and receive a hi-def signal? Or would I need a VGA bios?

yes it would. there are 2 types of component - ED component 480p(Y/Cb/Cr) and Hi def component 720p/1080i (Y/Pb/Pr). The pack supports 480p as does your tv, which is much better pq than composite, since composite and s-video are interlaced.

VGA Bios, since they dont make a component to vga cable. Or, however they do make component to vga trancoders, which convert the component signal to VGA for pc hookup.

My TV doesn't support 480p sad.gif  But I think I'll get the component cable anyways, it'll definately look better than regular composite.

I've seen component to VGA cables on ebay, but they just transfer the signal, they don't actually convert it... well, I have Yohihiro's M8+ VGA bios, but it's not BFM and I'm softmodded so I can't use it (I can't get evtool to convert it either.)

if it does not support 480p then you dont have component input jacks, which you said you did.

your right about the cables, the component to vga cable is for a device that can output a vga signal though component ports, but since you cant use the vga bios, then your stuck.

you may be able to use the hdtv pack, run your component cables into the trancoder, then run a vga cable to the pc.

Unless there's some other kind of component port that I'm not aware of, a TV doesn't have to support 480p to have component inputs, but it does have to have compnent inputs to support 480p.....

Thanks for the help, I think I'll just get an X2vga.

well that kind of defeats the purpose of having component inputs. converting 480p back to an interlaced resolution for display would be no different to the naked eye than viewing a composite video signal. its a waste of an input if you ask me.
