Is slayers still the best for a beginner? or is it outdated?

sorry I've been out of the scene for quite some time.

it's got the stuff you need. there's probably a few of the apps on there that could use a little updating.

just to clarify - does an auto-installer eliminate the need for FTP'ing after you've created the xISO?

not sure what you mean... the "need" for FTPing is there in many cases for many reasons. If you mean:
"By using the SlaYer's installer, will I not need to FTP the EvoX files onto my Xbox?"
The answer is yes, but you will need to FTP a HD backup in most cases... else you'll lose your savegames.

What the hell?! What does this have to do with anything? If you want general info on SlaYer's Install go to slayer.xbox-scene.com, maybe check out their official support forum...

Edit:
okay... i don't know why you want to know all this but here is a quote from the "About Us" section on SlaYer's site:
QUOTE
About Us

As the name suggests, this started up as a single man operation. SlaYer has been one of those people with a keen interest in the great capabilities of the Xbox because he realized it's potential as a great entertainment appliance.

After 6 months of research from the release of the Xbox he began dreaming of a simple way to get a modded Xbox to behave like a multi-use appliance. Several pieces of software began being released by different groups. However these applications were not originally designed to interact with each other very well and most were simply standalone.

The process of preparing the Xbox Hard Drive, installing the apps and configuring them for the different Hard Drive options was a time consuming and repetitive chore. SlaYer therefore decided to make a "wrapper" script to automate the process. Hence the installer was born. After releasing several versions people started using the installer religiously and began suggesting different features and functionality. One of the installer's greatest strengths is a dual manual which explains and goes into much detail almost everything a modder needs to know. Sadly most users never like to read and end up ruining their Xbox.

Since the installer uses the scripting capabilities of the most popular and pioneering application for the Xbox, Evolution-X, it seemed only proper to let everyone know that by including it in the name.

Aside from mere suggestions, several people on the Xbox scene offered their valuable time and knowledge to help the project along. From hosting, supporting, extensive software testing, to manual proofing and editing, these invaluable people have helped raise the quality of the installer and people's awareness of it. Shortly thereafter it became one of the most popular application for the Xbox and part of virtually every modders toolkit.

Of course all this attention came at a price when some of the more advanced users began bashing the installer as "doing too much" and being a "noob corrupting tool" or being a fraud due to the fact that it's based on EvoX, something that was made perfectly clear. For some reason people like to bash things, just for the opportunity to be heard. We feel that if you think the installer is not for you, do not use it, otherwise let people make up their own minds.

Today, in it's latest incarnation, the installer is totally free, supported by multiple people, caters to almost everyone, with support for different Hard Drive types and sizes, flashing support and inclusion of all the latest and best applications and bioses (as of release date), all tuned to work together as smoothly as possible.

Other eager Xbox fans have begun developing their own installers based on SlaYers and we admire their innovative drive and results.

It allows you to restore the system back to working condition. Its like installing windows.

The best installer is the one you create. I havent touched slayer, and was put off by the fact I needed to download 150+ MB on 56k. What I did was create my own, edititing the evox.ini file.
