Halo 2 Widescreen Issues
« on: December 24, 2004, 02:36:00 PM »

Hey everyone, I recently purchased the new Sony KV-34HS420.  It's a widescreen with 1080i capabilities (as well as being an HDTV monitor).  I'm currently still using the composite cables that came with my Xbox and have set the M$ dashboard to widescreen.  On most of my games such as Mortal Kombat Deception and Burnout 3, the game fills the screen.  Games that don't support the widescreen just occupy their 4:3 box.  However, I was under the impression that Halo 2 had 16:9 support, but whenever I load it, it always goes into a 4:3 box.  Do I need the HD Pack in order to use Halo 2 in widescreen?  Thanks for any help.

I think Halo1 had it, lot of talk on Halo2 having it but they just left it as 4:3, I could be very wrong though.

I believe you have to set it in your M$ dashboard and then also go into the settings for each game and set it to the correct aspect.  Some games will do this, others will not.  I still don't have an answer for sure but my new 65" HD widescreen will be here on Sunday so I can post back my findings.

Halo 2 is widescreen, but most TV's wont recognize it.  To check if its running widescreen, go to a 2 player game and see if it is split vertically or horizontally.  If it's in widescreen it will be split vertically.

Perhaps the Xbox Live update for Halo 2 will correct the widescreen issues.  Yes, the co-op appears with a left and right pane instead of top and bottom (which would be expected since I selected widescreen in the M$ dash).

You can play either side to side or top and bottom depending on how you set your settings in the dashboard.

this problem was recognized soon after the release of halo 2, some widescreen tvs with 1080i resolution were gettin their HUDs cut off, there is an update on Xbox Live that fixes this problem. So you can sign up for live, or buy a new tv.....

So, if you have LIVE and have done all the current updates... you're golden, right?

(BTW, what's a HUD?)

If you have Live and can play on it with Halo 2, you are updated 100%.

HUD = Heads Up Display
(The Radar, Ammo indicator, ect.)

In that case, I'm all set then.  I thought that's what a HUD was, just making sure.

There are other places you can get the update if you don't have LIVE, you just have to know where to look.  ;)

Get the HD pack.  Your best resolution will be 480i with the composite.

I've made a ppf file to fix the hud for those that don't have LIVE. It was made from the PAL version so I don't know if it'll work with the NTSC version. Try it and see I guess.

It needs to be applied to the default.xbe file.

Something to add for those going widescreen and still getting the weird stretched effect...

While in the M$ dashboard and adjusting the screen format, be sure to go into the 480p, 720p & 1080i settings and enable all of them.  Once you do that, you should be golden.
