Halo System Link Issues

I have a refurb XBox 1.0.  It hasn't been modded yet.  The system will not work in system link mode.  It doesn't find any other Xboxes running Halo.  However, it does work with Halo 2 system link games.  Any ideas why Halo 2 system link works but Halo doesn't?
