How To Get Surround Sound?
« on: December 02, 2004, 03:24:00 PM »

i was just wondering what digital inputs or outputs the surround sound system will need so that i can hook it up to the advanced av pack. I think its called a coaxial digital input?  Also, will i even be able to have surround sound and my xbox hooked up at the same time on my tv because my xbox already take up the red, yellow, and white video things on my tv?

Well you won't use the Red and White video things if you use the digital audio connector.

Also, what you want is an optical digital audio connection.  The XBOX doesn't support a coax digital audio connection.

if you get the av station made by madcow, it has coax output as well as every other connector.  in a previous "review" i mentioned its terrible component outputs... that problem no longer exists as i had a problem on my xbox and the box works great now, ive been using it for the last few months.  been using the optical out, svideo out and the component out (theres a switch on it).  its a clean solution to getting coax output as well and its was either 9.99 or 14.99, somewhere in that range.

what is the digital audio connecter? is on the advanced av pack? as you can see i do not know about all this stuff as most of you guys do (i am only 15).  this is what i think is wrong. in our living room we have surround sound hooked up to our tv.  we pluged it to the tv with the red and white av cables. now on my tv i only have 1 red, 1 white, and 1 yellow av inputs all of which or takin by my xbox. what i am trying to figure out is, how can i get surround sound to my tv if the inputs are already takin? is there even a way or does my tv just suck and i need a new one with more av inputs?

I 99% of the cases you don't hook up the input device (in this case a Xbox) to a TV. If you have surround already you probably have a reciver, hook the red and white cable up to that and select Dolby Prologic or Neo:6. Doesn't sounds as good as a DVD he?

Buy the Advance or High Defenition pack and hook the Optical cable (the cable which shines a nice bright red light if you turn the xbox on) to your receiver and enjoy true surround (with games and DVD that support it wink.gif)!

You can forgot about the red and the white plugs if you buy one of these packs, remove them completly from the receiver so that you won't accidently select the wrong mode (if you do you will hear the difference biggrin.gif) or having to select the right input (since the receiver gets two input signals)

You hook the yellow, red, white to the Home Theater amp... most amps of today have a jack on the back called "monitor out". That connection would then go to the TV. Your sound would then be put out to the speakers connected to the amp.  This setup would give you Dolby Prologic, Using the Advanced AV pack you can get S-Video which is better picture than the composite cables that a standard xbox comes with (yellow RCA cable), If you have a TV that has progressive component jacks (HDTV and some Digital TV have the Red,Blue,Green jacks) then you can go for the best picture available and buy the HD AV pack. Both packs come with digital sound hookups. (TOSlink or Optical cables... uses light transmitted down a fiber optic cable) Not to be confused with coaxial digital sound which transmits the signal electrically down a copper cable (looks just like an RCA jack) XBOX doesnt use coax (There are a few mods that can be done but I think they're a bit out of your league at the moment.) Both options give your the richest sound and true 5.1 Dolby Digital Sound... FARRRR superior than Dolby Prologic.

Hopefully I didnt put your head into overload.

First of all don't let age bother you.  I was hooking up people's AV stuff when I was younger than you.  Some people here are young some are old, it's just about what experience you have.

Anyway, there's different kinds of surround.  If you are talking true surround sound, most people think you mean 5.1 or DTS which requires a digital cable connection into your amplifier.

If you don't use a surround sound amplifier and don't have 5 or more speakers setup around your room, you are actually only using analog Dolby 2.0 surround.  That can be carried across red and white audio cables.  In fact, if you are only using the TV and it doesn't have external speakers (only internal ones) I'd be surprised if it wasn't just simulated surround and not true surround sound.

Just forgot the TV, TV sound is crap in 99% of the cases and I prefer to have it disabled. The six (5 speakers +1 subwoofer) speakers will have more than enough power to fill your room with sound.

Just forgot about the Tv and check if your receiver supports Optical in (''cheap'' one's with a DVD player build in don't support this) if it does buy the advance or High defenition pack if it doesn't just use the cables you have with the xbox now and buy an advance pack for the S-Video/RGB Scart output when you have for money to spare.

dang you guys are really confusing. all of this just goes in one ear and out the other for me.  what i want to know is can i get surround sound and my xbox hooked up at the same time with just one set of the red, yellow, and white inputs on my tv?  right now i have surround sound hooked up in the living room with the xbox sort of.  I just have the xbox connected to the av inputs and the surround sound to spare av inputs. Now my problem is i have to move the xbox to my room but i still want surround sound even though my tv doesnt have the spare av inputs like the living room tv.

No. You will not be able to get real 5.1 dolby surround using just the left and right analog stereo inputs on your TV. However, your TV may have a surround sound option where is uses effects to make the sound more like "surround"

You will need to get an Xbox video pack that has 5 channel analog out (which they dont make) and connect it to some 5.1 speakers that accept right front, right rear, left front, left rear and center.

Or get an HD pack with a digital coax or optical out and connect it to a reciever that has those one of those inputs or get the Klipsch speakers designed for consoles.

i am going to get the advanced av pack and connec that to the reciever on the surround sound system using a optical cable thing. i am not worried about "TRUE" surround sound. I just want to have the sounds going through all the speakers. if that works then it doesnt matter to me if its true surround sound or not. I just want to know if i will even be able to have the system and my xbox hooked up at the same time on my tv even though it only has 1 set of av inputs which are all takin up by my xbox. please someone tell me if i can do it and how if i can because i need to know soon. thanx

Ok, first, chill out.

Everyone has answered your question like 3 times.

I'll try to make it simple, but you are asking some things that don't make sense/are conflicting.

If you have a surround sound amplifier that connects to 5 or more external speakers then (which it sounds like you do):
You will need to get the advanced A/V pack or some other that has an optical digital audio connection (sometimes called TOSlink).  This will carry all of your audio, and you will no longer use the red and white cables to carry sound.

To connect to your TV you will use the single yellow video cable (or S-Video if your TV supports it) for video (but no audio will go to your TV).

Does that make sense?

Other options of course include...if your surround amp does video switching (90% do) you would connect your XBOX video cable to your amp, and the video output from your amp to your TV.

If you want any more detailed information, you need to ask a more detailed question, possibly including the inputs/outputs on the back of your amp (or a link to the owner's manual showing this) and your TV.

If you have 1 set of A/V connections open on your TV, why wouldn't you be able to connect your XBOX to them?

I still don't understand.
