No Sound From Games Or Dvd

So here it is: xbox is hooked up to audio/video switchbox and then the optical output from the switchbox down to my soundblaster audigy 2 zs platinum pro. When turning the xbox on we hear the sound that plays with the splash screen but when we load a game or play a dvd there is no sound. I have tried taking the switchbox out of the picture but we still have the same issue of no sound. this blows my mind seeing how we have sound when we first turn the xbox on. Any help would be muchly appreciated.
