Xbox Dvd Player Versus Standalone Dvd Player
« on: October 23, 2004, 12:04:00 PM »

I am left with the choice of what to hook up to my sole component input on a 27" Sony WEGA television.  Is the XBOX DVD playback comparable to a standalone DVD player or does it suffer from picture quality problems?

It's very comparable. No difference to many standalone players.

Obviously you have a modded XBox so you can patch it for 480p DVD plackback.  That helps a bit.  I don't know if your television is HD (or ED in the case of 480p) capable so it may not matter.

It is really going to depend on what you consider good, how picky you are (do you know what properly balanced color is supposed to look like), and what type of display you are using (bigger size and higher res is more revealing of flaws).  If you ask this question at avsforum they are going to tell you it sucks but most of these guys have at least $5K+ in audio/video equipment (although the consensus is that there are cheap $80 players that are significantly better).  If you ask most people on this forum they will tell you it's great and produces as good a picture as they've seen (although just about anyone will tell you the remote is clunky and a universal replacement is a good idea).

For me - I'll take a standalone.  Video quality aside (Xbox suffers from the chroma bug and limits IRE black levels with no override if you want a few of the technical flaws), a standalone has more options and tends to function more smoothly.  As to which standalone, whether the price trade off is worth a $20 DVD kit to you, and the issue of your single component input - that's all up to you.  That being said, spend the $20 now (you get the remote dongle for XBMC use), patch the dash or DVDX (DVD2X doesn't allow the remote), and if you are unhappy, think about upgrading later.

Sorry to drg this post out of the dephs of time.... but this is something that has been troubling me...

As my plasma excepts 480p, this must be better than even the prog sacn component output from my standalone dvd player,  as the screen is displaying the playback from the xbox in a higher res?

Does this also mean that I could play a high def version of a film in my xbox, and it would output via my x2vga+ at 720p or even 1080i depending on what it had been??

I use my Xbox with DVDx with the Hex code edit to make it 480p. I have a 60" HDTV. It works and looks just as well as my Panasonic DVD player, I do not see a diffrence.

Yes, if you use XBMC.

Guys just use your Xbox and give the XBMC guys a few bucks for their excelent work. I can't see a different although I have never seen an DVD player above the 300 bucks.

Cool, I am using XBMC, but my X2VGA indicator light is showing that I am viewing at 480p... how do I get 720p or 1080i??? I have enabled these in dashboard, but I can't find any settings in XBMC to change the output...

Am I able to use my XB to upscale the dvd output to 720p, or 1080i? or does it have to be high def mterial which will automaticaly force the display to the appropriate res??

Yes, if you use XBMC.

you've obviously not tried running a 1080i .TS via the xbox. works great if you only want to see 1 in every 24th frame ;)

the xbox simply isn't powerful enough to process most HD sources. the stuff on www.divx.com/hd works, but very little else does. no WMVHD and no 1080i.
