the backup button is for the xbox to backup key to your hd and your eeprom

if clicking msdash and it brings you back to evox.
1. have you deleted msdash files (default,xbe?) if not
try changing .ini  to  MSDashBoard   = "c:\xboxdash.xbe" or MSDashBoard   = "c:\msxboxdash.xbe"

With the back up not working, I would suggest you try a DVD-R disc, and see if that works. I know my cheap DVD-RW's cannot be read (at times it can) by my drive.

BTW, what drive do you have?

not all thomson are bad dvd drives...
