God, I Hate Everything About Slayer's

Plain and simple, autoinstallers like Slayers and X-Disk are ruining the mod scene. I commend the people who made these fine products, and I know they had good intentions, but honestly, people who mod their xbox should do it for the love of modding.

There is no harm in learning a little bit of the software your using, reading a few of the millions of posts that developed your software. Modding to me used to be something respected, where people who liked to program and tweak could get their fix. I know these poeple just want to be able to backup their games and watch movies and stuff, but they should do it by learning a little bit about xbox programs and stuff.

There is so many people I know that know ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING about xbox modding except that they have a modded xbox. They don't know what a dashboard is, what bios does, its just sadd. They all have the same slayers ini unchanged, same skins, everything, haven't changed a single app on their xbox. I mean come on, thats just embarrassing.

Modding should not be split up into the people that love to mod and the people that mooch of the others. Everybody should have to learn a littlebit. They don't have to make their own skins, and hack their own M$ dashboard but they should atleast know what a dashboard really is and what bios does. I'm just saying this because recently I've met alot of people that know nothing all thanks to slayers.

I know I'm not alone on this too.

In defense to all this bashing, I used Slayers to set up my xbox.  I agree it might not be best for the learning curve...but there are people like myself who have taken the time to still learn what's going on.  I have used my own resources to upgrade all the outdated apps in 2.5, and have been tweaking my own .ini file to set up evox the way I wanted it to look.  I am on a current mission to learn everything that people think I should need to know about it.

There are plenty of people out there who just want the easy way out...what's the big deal.  All they wanna do is be able to put games on their hd without knowing all the technical stuff...so what.  Everybody owns a computer, but how many of you actually built your own?

If you don't like x-disk or slayers...fine, but it's not necessary to criticize people who use it and refer it.

Hi there,

My 2c. I think the AutoInstallers are excellent.

What spicymeatball911 should be hating are the people that dont want to learn. The installers have nothing to do with the type of people that use them.

Most of my friends that have modded their XBox, have use the Slayers Disk as the first step. Once everything is loaded, it is much easier to understand how the programs work and they go off from there.

On the other hand there are people that will send there XBox away to get modded and then ask stupid questions over and over again without searching first. They want to be given the solution to there problem, instead of trying to work it out first.

Also, I use Slayers to lock and unlock hard drives... And to ensure myself a clean format and rebuilding of a large hard drive. It sure beats the hell out of formatting it the long way with FTP commands, then opening up HDD Prepare, then FTPing again to transfer all of the files over, then running a program to lock the hard drive. Why do all of that, when Slayer's can do it?

FYI, Evox is what does all of that.  There are tuturials on writing an action script just like the one that slayer uses to format the hard drive.  The action scripts to lock/unlock the hard drive are in the readme.  It's not exactly like he coded the app to format/lock/unlock/copy files.

I tend to disagree on some of these points.

If I had to make a sweeping generalization of the "average" auto-installer user.. it is that they are lazy or don't understand how or where to find they info they need to do things on their own.

In the #xbox-scene channel.. we were getting swamped so bad at one point by people who screwed up their xbox units with slayers or it's many clones.. that we had to remove support for it from the channel altogether.  Some days.. we got in excess of 300+ people who fucked something up using the installer.. or worse.. couldn't figure out why something wasn't working after the fact or how they could grade a util from the package.

Slayers and it's clones offer a quick fix.. but then for the most part leave their users hanging.  At least SLayers has an official channel to get help from.. unfortunately.. it seems people don't go there.

The only "auto-installer" I'll ever endorse.. is the very basic EVOXNEWHD tool on xbins.  It partitions, formats, and lays out a few basic tools.  Granted.. it's not for the newbie either.. since it isn't designed to help you backup existing drives etc.

I expect people to read guides.. ask questions.. and get invvolved and informed before leaping head first.

Course.. there is the flip side.  People fuck up their XBOX units with auto-installers.. and haven't a clue on how to fix them.  I then get to make some big $$$ fixing their simple problem.  Once I have.. I then direct them to the appropate guides and tutorials so next time they can fix it on their own. (I treat exploit users the same way btw)

So.. auto-installers are generally for the lazy and un-motivated. However.. without them.. I'd lose about 200-400$ a week in revenue.

hmm.. on second thought...

laugh.gif Very nice.

Installer CDs are great of you are doing several installs a week, it saves valuable time.  You can't be mad at slayer because people chose to use it with no f-ing clue what is going on.  I think this is why you find that most places on IRC refuse to help people with it.  The xbox scene channel being one, the official evox channel being another.  People use it, and completely lost on what just happened to their xbox.

In the end.. "slayers breeds lazy newbs".  Intentional or not, that is what it does.

I tend to agree with the original poster on the point that its sad people dont know what a bios is, how to edit an ini, where to even begin editing one, how to add skins or even change the apps that slayers installs. Instead they all sit around "whens the new slayers coming out that has the new xbmp in it!??!?!". That is not acceptable in my eyes, you should atleast do the reading and learn how to swap out apps and not wait for however long it takes for those "smart" slayers ppl add new apps and pack it all up for you.

slayers does breed lazy newbs even if thats not its intention...maybe slayers should consider some sort of a help guide on screen in his program, atleast that way you can say you did something except packing up apps and editing an ini and wording the nfo like the features are slayers "exclusive"

vjreddy12, maybe.. but without they would be forced to read at least the simplest tutorial.  It's not hard to install evox and apps on your own, and its not even all that hard to do what slayer has done.

Slayer's is awesome because it lets me lock/unlock my hard drive and format my new hard drive and back up my games.

Sure...except those are features of ConfigMagic, EvoX, and dvd2xbox.  Aside from the fact that lazy people feel encouraged by the wipe-your-ass-for-you mentality of the "autoinstaller scene", I'm annoyed by the fact that the homebrew authors seem to get a fraction of the credit given to autoinstaller authors, while ironically autoinstaller authors put in a fraction of the work put in by homebrew authors.

Hi again,

Thats what i am trying to say.....those type of people dont want to read, learn or understand anything that happens.

They just want the quick fix.

They will end up asking the stupid questions anyway, with or without slayers.

wink.gif )  So far no one has complained about the tut leading them astray.  It would be ideal if we could get people to follow basic guides like that, but you can't legislate morality, or brains . . . that's life.  Props to Slayer for trying to make an end-all suite of action scripts for Evox, it's just too bad that people refuse to read the directions first.  (200-400 a week off of botched Slayer installs? Damn!)

True.

It's quickly becoming apparent.. that people don't even know the names of the homebrew authors.. much less the names of the apps.. but they sure as hell seem to know the name SLAYERS or DUNGOENX or XDISK or whatever.

Sad.

As posted above.. where there is ignorance and lack of motivation to learn.. there is a place for us to make some $$$.

To the auto-installer / exploit authors of the scene.. keep up the hard work.  Find new and improved ways for people with no clue to screw up their units. Feb-April is a notorious dry spell.. so if you guys can release some new stuff.. and get the ball rolling... those of us who will take 2 minutes to learn to install an app proper can make some bucks from your "hard work".

------------------------------
New XBOX owner wants modded xbox without modchipping it.. goes the free route and attempts an exploit.  Something goes wrong. $$$ for HSDEMONZ

New XBOX Owner get a chip.. but then is too lazy to read anything about homebrew.. downloads bloated slayers cause someone said it's cool and easy.. and later screws something up.. $$$ for HSDEMONZ.

See a pattern here? smile.gif

BTW.. in the time it took me to reread this thread.. I got 2 new customers who need botched slayers issues fixed.

$$$

To the hard working INI writers of the world..  beerchug.gif
