Hdtv And Dvd Question....
« on: August 08, 2004, 02:02:00 PM »

I just recently purchased an HD TV.  It handles 720P and 1080i.  I also purchased the M$ HD composite cable.  I don't have the MS DVD reciever kit or whatever it is called.  What is the best software out there for me to watch DVD's at the best quality that my equipment will allow?  I've tried XBMC, but  I can't get it to play any DVDs.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hdtv And Dvd Question....

DvD2x is basically just the Xbox DVD player hacked for playback without the kit.  You can patch it for 480p and it's okay.  There are some other threads in this forum (damn search).  An NTSC DVD is setup for 480i/480p.  When you talk about the best quality, displaying a source at anything other than its native resolution involves scaling and manipulation - no new info is added.  Lines are just doubled, tripled, quadrupled....to arrive at a higher res.  Nothing special.  Some people like it, some people don't, few people think the Xbox is a "good" DVD player regardless of what you do with it.  I'd opt for DVD2X - if you can get XBMC to work give it a shot.  If it were me, I'd buy a decent standalone unit.
