a crossover cable has a rj45 pin at both ends.

It sounds like your using a phone jack to connect to dial up internet service.  Is that true.  If you don't have an ethernet port or a nic card in your computer for the crossover cable to fit in then you need to get an nic.   They're only like $15usd.  You gotta have this connection on your computer.
