Use an Evox boot disc and FTP the evox XBE to your Xbox HDD.  Make sure it's named evoxdash.xbe.

How can you install Evox when you do not know which version??
Did you ever heard " EVOLUTION FORUM"?
IF YOU DONT - DONT START MESSING WITH YOUR XBOX!

Ummm... you are assuming he did the install himself.  He didn't "mess" with his XBOX.

So what did happen here?  I've never used XBOX Live, but would be curious what happened here in case I ever do.

You can always get one of those HD Formatting boot disk makers and modify the INI file to do only the C drive.

At the bottom of NewHDEvox1.4's ini file it says

# This will format all drives
#
ConfigSector "hd.bin"
Format c:
Format e:
Format f:
Format x:
Format y:
Format z:

copy "cdrive" "c:"
copy "edrive" "e:"

I would assume that if you took out all the format lines except Format C: and the edrive line that would replace all the files on the C drive and make the xbox bootable again.

But remember two things

1. I am just a newbie!!  So I would not do this until someone posts up and says hey that is a good idea.  Even then I would go through the INI file to make sure I did not miss anything.  Its late and I am tired so I might have missed something

2.  MAKE A BACKUP (Do not blame me if this does not work, this is just what I would do)

Good Luck

ok guys...settle for a minute while I explain.

I had my xbox modded by someone else.  I had no knowledge of anything to do with xbox's before I got the mod done.  I played on my cousins modded xbox and thought it was great so I decided to get one myself.  I paid my $700 to get it all sorted and knew no details of what had been done.

However, I wanted to know more and was told to look at this website.  I have read just about every tutorial on the stuff I have on my xbox.  I had an older version of evolution x installed as I have had to manually path the xbe's with a hex editor, so to those who think I shouldn't mess with my xbox - I HAVEN'T!

Now to the problem.  I had just started topspin tennis for the first time.  My brother is at my house and we decided to play a multiplayer game.  He accidently clicked on 'xbox live' as the multiplayer game he wanted to play.  The screen then showed a bar that was "updating" and once this bar was finished updating it said it couldn't find an internet connection.  After rebooting the xbox I get the choice of memory, settings, xbox live or music.  The evox dash doesn't show.

My conclusion is that topspin tennis has something within the game that when you choose xbox live it updates some files.  I would say that there was some xbe's overwritten (default.xbe??) so now the evox dash is pointed to.  I am no longer able to access the hdd via ftp but I'm in the process of getting a cdrw to make an evox boot disk.  I'll let you all know how it goes.

btw, thanks for the help so far (from those who have helped).

I ran into the same problem today. I bought a demo disc at Bestbuy, with 9 demos and LIVE on the disc. I had Evox installed and working fine for the past 4 months. After running the disc and trying to boot back up without the disc in the drive, I got an error 21. Upon checking the C drive, I noticed that 2 new directorys had been added and my original evoxdash.xbe was replaced with the MS dash.xbe. Fixing this was simple. I deleted the 2 new directory's and ftp'd the evox dash.xbe from my backup CD-R disc and the problem was fxed.

Big thanks to you all for your help.  My xbox is now back up and running.  After going through mastertito's noob guide to your first evox boot disk my evox is now back to normal.

Chefelf was right on how to fix this.  Just boot up to the cd and then transfer the evoxdash.xbe back to the c: drive on the xbox and BING - it works.

Thanks again.

Might I also recommend reflashing your BIOS with one that boots to evoxdash.xbe on your F: drive instead of your c: drive?  Just move all your evox crap over, return C: to it's original state and Flash with the new F:evoxdash.xbe bios.  You can use a BIOS editing tool to set it up that way.

Maybe more trouble than it's worth but I don't give a crap what happens to my C: drive now.

I have the same problem, Prince of Persia somehow installed the Xboxlive update on my xbox and now it only loads the original MSdash instead of evox.

Were can I find the files to make an Evox boot disk so i can ftp again?

So the XBOX Live update deletes the Evox dash?

If you have it on the C: Drive, I believe it will overwrite/change those files.  Everyone should be booting to the F: drive at this point, it saves alot of hassle.

Another alternative to using F Drive is to make your bios (custom of course) boot to another dashname like C:bootdash.xbe and just rename evoxdash.xbe to bootdash.xbe. BTW, I know that is a little advanced but something you may be able to learn reading the Tutorials on this site.

Anyways, with the task at hand, you need to make a boot disk on a CD-RW or DVD format as it will NOT work on a CD-R disk.

Has anybody ever made a Live! Recovery CD? That would be nice for n00bs and could be a small download. All it would need to have is copies of evox, avalaunch, or any other dash that could be copied back to the drive in case of the xboxdash.xbe or other boot xbe was replaced by live!.

Example Menu:

Choose Dash

-Evox
-Avalaunch
-UnleashX

Then subchoices:

--Install EvoX to C:xboxdash.xbe
--Install EvoX to C:evoxdash.xbe
--Install EvoX to F:evoxdash.xbe
--Repair EvoX to C:xboxdash.xbe <-- renames xboxdash.xbe to msxboxdash.xbe and copies in evox to xboxdash.xbe
--Repair EvoX to C:evoxdash.xbe <-- copies evox to C:evoxdash.xbe and leaves alone the evox.ini

anyways you all get the idea. this is just a loose thought but would be more involved! Of course most of the above is considering which bios/modchip you have. Like how the old X1's always boot to xboxdash.xbe and that's it!
