I seem to be making some marginal progress, ive now got the xbox to display an ip address, this was achieved by forcing the speed of the nic under its properties to 10mb/half duplex as opposed to the automatic setting, although im STILL getting the 'network cable unplugged' on the pc (running xp btw)

OK PPL first of all u gotta make sure that the ip on your Xbox is the same on your network card.  - Second - also make sure that the subnet mask is exactly the same on both the xbox and your pc.
         - third - make sure your default getaway is the same as your xbox and pc but on this one, the las number must be 1 ok!

THIS ARE THE INSTRUCTIONS ON HOW TO CONNECT THE XBOX DIRECTLY TO PC RUNNING WINDOWS XP HOME EDITION:
1- Make sure u have a crossover cable.
2- connect the cable to the pc and the xbox.
3- go to Start Menu/ Control Panel / Network and Internet connections /
4- Click on Network connections.  there u'll see a Dial-up icon and a LAN or High speed connection.
5- Clck on the icon that said Local Area Connection (u should have that icon if u got a LAN network card installed on your pc.
6- U should see a 'General' tab and a 'Support' tab
7- On the ' General' tab, click on 'Properties' then , check mark the TCP/IP protocol only, ok that ONLY. uncheck all the others items on the list.
8- check mark 'Show icon in notification area when connected'. and click OK
9- Make sure u dont have a firewall installed on your pc or on your network LAN card.
9.1- Click on 'Support' tab, and write down the ip address and the subnetmask.
10 - turn on your Xbox with the Evox already installed.  
11- go to 'System Management'
12- go to 'System Settings'
13- Change:
    - 'Setup Network' to YES
    - 'Use Static IP' to YES
    - 'IP' Put the IP u wrote down from your pc.
    - 'SubnetMask' do the same
    - ' Default Getaway' put the same as the IP address but the last number is 1.
14- Once u do all that sh** go down the menu and  select 'Save and Exit'.
15 - Go back to the starting menu and select - Reset. (that's the first one on the menu.
16 - Now that u reseted your xbox u should see the icon on your pc of a connection.
17- Open FlashFXP
18 - On the right side of the screen click on the stupid ray of light. (connect)
19 - Now another menu pops up. On that menu that pops up, click on quick connect
20- write the user name: xbox and the password: xbox
21- 'Server or URL' =write the ip address u used on your xbox.( the one u wrote down from ur pc.) (the one u saved on the Evox system settings) got it??!
22- click on 'Toggles' tab. and uncheck the one that says 'Use passive mode'.
23- Click on connect and u should be able to connect.
24- if u r not able to connect make sure that u still have the same ip address on your Xbox and your pc.
25- if u are not able to connect then u got the wrong cable or your LaN card is F*** up.

Ok, heres the deal, ive read the tut located on these forums and this is whats happening (and what ive done so far)
I have Windows XP Pro running, a VIA Rhine III Fast Ethernet Adapter installed with the most up to date drivers, a working cross over cable (it is working and it is a crossover cable)

Basically you can setup the [Network] Section of your evox.ini to look like this:
[Network]
SetupNetwork = Yes
StaticIP = Yes
Ip = 192.168.0.3
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
Defaultgateway =
DNS1 = 0.0.0.0
DNS2 = 0.0.0.0

DONE

You may also have SkipifNoLink and you can set that to No.
Also verify your [FTP] Section looks like this:

Enable = Yes
Password = xbox
IGR = No

DONE

Now on your computer go to the properties of the NIC that has a crossover cable connected to the Xbox. Click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and then properties. Enter the following:
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: <leave blank>
DNS: <leave blank>

DONE

That’s it. Simple huh? Now set up your FTP Client. For FlashFXP, install the program and run it. Click on “Site Manager” then click to create a new site. Name it Xbox or whatever and for the IP enter 192.168.0.3, verify the port is 21. The username and password are both “xbox”, all lower-case and without the quotes. Go to options and uncheck any check marks on PASV or passive mode. Apply the settings and connect.

'Connection timed out' error

So heres what I see on the system settings on the xbox;

On my pc the details are exact as they are printed in the tut above, the only things ive done different since this is force the speed of my card through the configure/advanced/connection type from automatic to 10mb half duplex, and as a result the previously 'no link' xbox suddenly found the card. Also ive seen on the net reports of people disabling the media sense on xp and 2000 machines for people having 'media disconnected' errors when typing ipconfig /all or 'network cable unplugged' errors, so i did this which got rid of the 'media disconnected' but not the 'network cable unplugged', anyway, here is the report from the ipconfig /all.
