Xbox As Tivo?

best way to do it is like this.

XBMP / XBMC you can stream videos from PC to them.

Set up a folder on your PC that is Shared with XBMP/XBMC.

Buy a PC product that allows your PC to be a Tivo... Pinnacle products, Ati products, Myth TV with other capture hardware.. ect.. ect..

Set them up so all shows that are TIVED are dumped into that shared folder.

You don't even have to touch the PC after that.. as long as you have it set up to record what you want on a schedule.

Then when you turn on your XBMP / XBMC it will have all the shows your TIVOED.  You can even delete them from your Xbox.  Easy solution and you don;t have to spend a fourtine to hack your Xbox to be a tivo and a playback machine.

95% of the people using XBMP or XBMC are using streaming...

if you are willing to hack your xbox and BUY some sort of capture device to add to your xbox to make it a TIVE (which hasn;t been done yet, but for argument sake if there was and you were willing to buy it), why not spend the cash on a device for your PC to be the tivo.  It would be cheaper and you have alot more options with the PC as the TIVO.

There is MythTV which I believe is Linux and can be run on Xbox.  That being said, for video input you are going to be relying on USB 1.0 and you will need to buy a USB 1.0 capture device.  This means low quality video and actually paying money to set it up (something that Xbox modders have a huge issue with traditionally).  IMO, your money and time are better spent on a Replay TV, TIVO, or a real capture card for your PC.  If you search MythTV here I believe you'll find links or just search that and "Xbox" on the web.

Hi,

My friend has been wanting to make his own TiVo. Simple case, motherboard, and hard drive.

And I told him that he should get an xbox instead. It would be much cheaper.

But is it possible for the xbox to record from the video source?

I know that there just isn't some option to let you do this, there will have to be some modding done to the xbox.

Has anyone done this? Tried this? Know anyone who has done this?

Please, I need some help...

Thanks, th3gh05t

Yeah, it used a usb tv card for it, but the project was a scam to make them some money. It needs a handy peice of software to do it and noone has made it yet. best bet is to buy a tivo. you can get hacks for it to add 2 bigger hard-drives and stuff...

There is a project that accomplishes almost exactly this.  The only difference being that it uses a client/server architecture.  The project is called MythTV.  It is a linux based PVR.  There are bootable images available for the Xbox that allow the Xbox to run as a thin client in conjunction with a server box you set up.  With a decent server box and 2 or 3 mpeg capable tuner cards you can have yourself an excellent pvr system with so many more capabilities than any off the shelf pvr.  Once you've got your server setup you could potentially put an Xbox on every tv in your household and have pvr functionality everywhere.

Ok, here it is as I see it. Right now the Xbox has no video input device, right? Wrong.

In response to the PS2 EyeToy, MS announced an Xbox Live web chat camera thing. I'm sure the software for that could be used to take video in from elsewhere as well.

It's a start. Did anyone else think of this?

EDIT: Oh yeah, where might I find the thin client boot disc for the Xbox?

Keep in mind running a Myth frontend client requires a backend server to communicate with.  It's been some time since I've seriously looked at Myth ( I got a killer deal on a replaytv unit with service last december), but here's a url where you should find the xbox distribution

well. a usb video capture card and linux/custom xboxapp would be the only way. and a usb1.1 (xbox uses 1.1) vid cap card would be very low picture quality.... i suppose the only fast imput is the newtork card. but i dont know of any vid cap cards that go on networks... maybe having the xbox as an acces point would work. have one maine one and use xbox's to stream to

I'd be very interested in a solution for this as well as I want to make my xbox a media center...but obviously it lacks this feature. I don't want to spend $500-$600 on a PC where I'd still have to run Windows when XBMC works better

You should really check out

Those threee websites combined have enough information to make your own Xbox/TiVo.
