Hello All, Great forum...I tried to find some info but search feature not working. I'm thinking of purchasing an Xbox. If I upgrade the HD can I use the Xbox as a digital recorder and record my favourite shows? What additional hardware or software would I need to install on the Xbox? TIA

No, not possible.  Even if you install Linux, there is only client software which would require a PC linux server on your network working as well.

The XBOX simply wasn't designed to do this.  Also you mention recording HD.  Only a $700+ TiVo or HTPC can do that.  No way is a sub $200 game console going to be able to do that.

There isn't even a good way to get video input in an XBOX.  The only way is through a hacked USB 1.1 device which is too slow for good resolution video, and cannot support HD.

Mr. Ed you seam so unwilling to exept the fact that the XBOX does say "Audio Video Input/Output". Why does it say it then? Because thats what is molded into the plastic! Oh come on, That is the lamest reply I could have ever read!

You're right this has never happened.  You should tell this to all the Dish Network HD PVR owners who have a 921 that has areas for and labels for FireWire ports that they should be able to get them working because no manufacturer has ever changed a design after the cabinet tooling was already made.

Riiiiggghhhtttt.  Do you know how expensive injecting molded tools are?  I do, I used to work in that industry, and there are lots of examples of manuf. who changed a design after the tooling and then didn't bother changing the tooling.

But hey, why don't you get a diagram of the pin layout of their proprietary plug, check the pin connections to the XBOX motherboard, and prove me wrong...instead of calling me lame while at the same time proving you know nothing of what you speak.

If I stuck a sticker on your forehead that said "retarded" that wouldn't make it true.  Your actions would make it true.  Don't believe everything you read, even if it's molded into the plastic of an XBOX. jester.gif

If audio/video input is possiable then we could use the xbox as a TiVo, Karaoke, or even as visual entertainment for a party where turntables could be pluged into the audio input.

Umm...M$ came out with Music Mixer (or whatever the fuck)...it comes with a disc and a wireless microphone (the adapter plugs into *shock* a controller port), so that somewhat takes care of the Karaoke part.

i agree.  usb 1.1 is way too slow.  i even have an ati all in wonder card in my computer (8500 for those that care) and i'm not that impressed with the quality.  came in handy for a while, but got old.  now i just have a comcast dvr.  works fine.  would just be better if i could capture the vid files from the dvr.  i give it 6 months before someone figures it out.  but anyway, i say just get a agp or pci card for your computer, or get a dvr.

I don't know where you are located at but in the US the port does say "Audio Video Input/Output". You may have also answered my question as far as the input being a mode selector and not a actual audio video input.

Does anyone know of a way to just get a audio signal input to the XBOX? I would like to find out if I could use the XBMC as a visual devise for turntables at a party.

I'm in the US as well...southwestern Wisconsin to be a bit more precise. I had a case from a v1.0 Xbox, but ended up throwing it away (case mod gone horribly wrong), so I can't verify but I'm pretty sure it said AVIP. One issue to think about is that there isn't a video DEcoder chip in the Xbox for the system to handle any resultant signals internally, meaning a one-way trip for video. This is based on the fact that the video encoder chip (either Connexant, Focus or Xcalibur) sits between the GPU/Northbridge chip and the AVIP connector and is used to encode signals leaving the GPU chip for your television/projector/monitor/etc.

As far as a turntable hooked up to an Xbox, there is a small possiblilty. Using an Xbox controller to USB connector cable, Linux, and a USB external soundcard (and hoping there's a Linux driver for the soundcard) might work...though I'm not guaranteeing anything.

USB 1.0 ~ 1.5 megabytes/sec
      1.1 ~ 8 megabytes/sec

Uh, no...USB 1.0 and 1.1 = 12Mbits per secondmax.

USB 2.0 = 480Mbits per second max.

I hate this topic so much.  It comes up all the time too and there is always some yahoo that won't take 'no' for an answer.  He is also the person without any skills in programing or hardware to contribute to such a project and just looking for something cool and to save a few $$.  Logically, something like this has probably occured to one of the XBMC developers (this isn't a revolutionary concept here).  Why haven't they ever persued it?  Cause it's very hard and time consuming to implement, would yield poor results, and can be done cheaply and far better on a dedicated readily available device which can be integrated into an Xbox home theater system without major issues.

ahhh, i hope the thread nazi's don't yell at me, but......OK so i admit i didn't read the last 4 pages of this thread b/c well....i'm lazy.  BUT  i read on another thread that there was some research started on inputing through the ethernet port.  Any news on that?  Any websites or such on a device that could theortically go from coax to cat5?  That would solve the bottleneck problem.  But there is that hard drive bottle neck still (though i don't know too much about hdd's so i couldn't understand how big of a bottle neck it is)

thnx guys :-D

(PS I'd be a thread nazi too, too many people keep saying the same crap)
