You don't have to FTP to your box but 99% of the reason to install chip and hacked BIOS is so you can FTP into your box to access the DVD drive and make backups.

I solved my problem!  I used UltraISO instead of nero to burn the cdrw.  I burned the slayers auto-installer v2.5 on a tdk cdrw and it worked the first time I put it into my xbox!
