Will Evox Incorperate These?
« on: October 14, 2003, 02:29:00 AM »

here are some things id love to see in future versons, and would love to hear others ideas as well.

- basic divx/xvid support (would eliminate 90% of my need for XBMP)
- more dash animation/transition effects/bg ambients/etc for skinners.
- indash ini/text editor (bypass the need to make quick changes via ftp)
- game/app icon previews
- integrated dvd2xbox type app for direct rip of dvd's right from within evox.

im not exactly sure how the evox team feels about adding pidly stuff like this, but it would definatly add to the value to the already rock solid code, and keep it way ahead of all the other dash's out there. anyone got any other ideas?

My idea is that you switch to MXM.

yea i figured people would poke fun, but the issue is that MXM is sluggish as hell. i mean dont get me wrong those guys do some kick ass work, but it doesnt "feel" right when im using it. vid previews are cool, but cumbersome and a pain in the ass. at least the addition of a background mp3 would add so much depth and ambieint to the dash its not even funny. oh well, so much for thinking haha!

I wasn't really poking fun, though it was a nice side effect.  My take on it is this:
A lot of people like evox cause it is no frills.  Its simple and get the job done.  they boot and launch what they want, minimal config needed, fast enough, can flash bios and ftp server so great for n00bs.

Then there is a dash like MXM.  In constant development, many frills, highly customizable with all the xml, many if not nearly all user features mentioned get incorporated or planned to, etc.

Both are good yet may appeal to different people.  Or the same people but at different times during their "modding" of the xbox.  When or if evox starts adding a bunch of the frills expected in a dash like MXM or ava then it closes the gap of those differences that make it appeal to the different people.  I wouldn't like that.  I like the simple dash for different reasons than I like MXM.

So for you wanting those features, I'm really not joking, reconsider MXM or ava.

why wouldn't evox plan on adding any of those features.  I am sure the people who created evox would like their dashboard to improve and would like it to be the most used.  If they added those features along with others, surely more people would use is it.  So why wouldn't they?

Its not really a competition.....
Its not being sold, there is no point in outdoing everyone else.  Evox does what it does very well.  Its easy to install, easy to configure, and easy to use.  Like has been said, if you want music, and videos, etc in your dash, there are others to use.

They are not announced to the public ahead of time.  Hype and glamour is not the thing for evox.

I would seriously try MXM.  I did, now evox is my backup dash.  Give it a shot, you can load it like any other app, so you don't need to replace your existing evox dash.  Not yet at least rolleyes.gif

As far as evox goes.  It is still under development with new features.  But was said before, you won't know what is coming till its here.

ive run just about every other dash out there, and evox is still king. i said ^^ there that MXM is sluggish. and configuration is a bitch.

ALL of the options I mentioned require abolutley ZERO configuration by the end user, they are things that would already be built in and funtioning. Im not concerned that evox doesnt feature these options, it will always be my 1st dash of choice, but they would certainly be nice.

Well... I gotta tell ya.. I totally agree with the creator and designer of Evox.... EvoX is what it is and it does what it does very well... I personally hate people adding new features to their dashes all the time.. it always seems that the more new features they add.. they always don't work right and take 3 or 4 upgrade releases to make the new features work right... and while they were adding new features, they decided to rewrite the code for other features... and then the features that did work right are now f**ked.. I'd much rather have a dash with features that work... and not a bunch of features that I'll never use, because I'm waiting for the next 3 releases till they work right...
BTW... MXM is the best dash available.. and once you read the documentation and start digging into the xml files... it's not that hard to setup... but I do hate waiting for the features that don't work right to be fixed... but hey... that's why the source code for MXM is freely available... if you want, download and fix/takeout/add what you want...

What I'm shocked about is the broken FTP server in the newest EvoX dash version (3921, I believe). It's amazing that they'll brake, and leave broken, one of the only features that makes it useful (let's face it, EvoX is really only good for 1) simplicity 2) easy FTP setup and usage, and 3) Flashing a new BIOS).
Not meaning to bash EvoX, but I'll bet they've lost alot of users, including myself, in that last version. I know that's not what it's about, and they're probably happy with broken FTP, but still, it's a point to consider.

What kind of sense does that make?
If you have problems, you dont HAVE to upgrade.
And would the devs be 'happy'?  The FTP problems are known, and it is being worked on.

BTW - its also good for launching apps, which is what a dash needs to do, right?
And 99% of people also use it to flash their hard drive.

The remark you quoted was sarcasm, my friend. Of course they wouldn't be happy with broken FTP. smile.gif
While you are correct that an update isn't manditory, it's still a shock they didn't test it beforehand- it's a fairly important feature to break without catching it before release, don't you believe?
Forgot to add the two features you've mentioned- HDD formatting and application launching. I believe MXM is on its way to implementing the first feature (although I am not a dogged follower of its development- I could be incorrect), and virtually every dashboard can launch applications (even the M$ one, with a bit of 'hacking').
