Evox 3921 - Drive G Support
« on: February 21, 2004, 10:30:00 AM »

This may sound like a stupid questions....

I have my everything set up properly now. My questions are:

When my F: drive is all used up, will my games automatically back up to the G Drive?  If so, which directory will it go to?

Secondly, do i have to edit my EVOX.INI file to search for games in the G-Drive?
eg:

Section  "X-BOX Games"
{
   Line "- Installed X-BOX Games -",2
   SortStart
   AutoAddItem "f:\HDDLoader\"
   AutoAddItem "e:\HDDLoader\"
   AutoAddItem "g:\HDDLoader\"
   SortEnd
}

Wait...IM consfused. Slayers 2.5 says it has >137 Gb support, but in order to get more than 137 the bios has to be edited?

Most of the New Bioses support > 137GB, please read Slayers Manual, if you goto the Flash Bios option in  then menu you will see different Bioses and few with > 137GB at the end.  You don't have to manually edit your Bios, you can if you wish but it is already provided, meaning either edit the BIOS or Reflash with a Bios that is provided by Slayer.

i thought i might put this up in relevance to this situation. i've been a modder now for quite some time now, and just recently i put 320gb hdd in my xbox. its quite full of various media, and the f: got partiotioned with about 312gb of that space after an evox format. i never really went past filling 256gb worth of the f:/ partition until the other day when i decided to bak up sum stuff off my computer and then reformat the pc. so anyway, i put the stuff on that i wanted to backup, reformatted my pc and then begin the rebuild. when it came time to put the files back on, i went into my f: and there was nothing in any of the directories, they were totally empty. the thing was that i didnt get the space back. so naturally, somehow the fatx has been screwed with and the data cant be gathered. so i tried to scrape the underlying data using a scalpel, to no avail. as it turns out, the fatx cant support a single partition being bigger than 256 gb, sure u can see it, but the balance of the free space (post 256gb) isnt writable to. the drive starts to re-image over the top of itself. sure you can have a drive bigger than 256gb, i just wouldnt suggest partitioning more than 256gb to any drive. using frosties recovery disk and xb partitioner which is very straight forward, u can set up to about 6-7 media partitions. i ended up having to reformat my xbox aswell, and lost a 600gb library in total off my network. now i've got 2 drives of 155gb set to g:/ and f:/. i've written this post for anyone seeking answers as to why there xbox makes files disappear without giving bak the space. this is the reason, its happened to a lot of people and no-one seems to know why. i hope this sheds some light on the subject.

Why you brought up a 5 year old post to report your data corruption is baffling me.

Closing.

Ok, this is great and all that this feature has been implimented but I would like to know what the max HD is that can be used now. I have a 160 in there now and it works great, I'm using all 160gb. If I choose to put a 250gb in there, will I get the full 250? i.e. Get 137 in c:e:f:x:y:z: and another 113 in g:? If so that'd rock, I didn't see mention of this anywhere as to what it's new max gb is.

People have used 300GB drives with success - and can use the entire 300GB (of course, there will be FATX filesystem overhead, but it's minimal).

If you're putting a new 250GB drive in, there's no need to create a G: for the space above 137GB - you can just make your F: drive fill-up the entire remainder of the drive.  You only really need F:/G: split if you're upgrading an existing hard drive (which already has an F: up to 137GB that you want to preserve), or if you plan on booting non-LBA48-enabled bios's, and still want access to your F: drive in that situtation.

Theoretical limit: about 2.2 Terabytes (max physical size of drive when using 32bits for a sector #).

Actual limit: unknown (but quite big) (I suspect FATX may have some max partition size issues - but you could create multiple partitions if that's the case)

How can I use my current 120GB HDD and "ghost"/"clone" its image to a new and bigger (200+GB) HDD? Do I need to create this G: partition?

If so, what program should I use?

Thanks in advance.

Its the same process you used to put the 120gb in the first time.
FTP Your current hard drive off, install new hard drive, format new hard drive, FTP your data back.

i think what he's asking is if you had a 120 before and say you upgrade to 250, can you use norton ghost and clone the 120 onto the 250 and have the remaining 130 in g.

i wanted to know if you need a special bios for all this?

That's exactly what I was trying to say. I bet they can't recognize the XBox's File System.

Yes, you can use norton ghost.  Check http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/clone-hdd.php

He mentions using identical size drives for the copy, but I did copy a 120 to a 160 with no noticable problems.  Do this at your own risk though.

Cannibal - using the method described above doesn't require the computer to "understand" xbox lingo....  ;)
