Evox 3921 - Hd Temp
« Reply #15 on: September 16, 2003, 03:09:00 PM »

Maybe we should compile some sort of list of xbox hardware version, hdd manufacturer & part number (maybe manufacturing date too?) just to get some sort of idea as to what this is? of course, a little more info about HDD_Temp_ID would help tongue.gif

all my info except hdd part # which is WD800BB-00CAA1 and mfg date, Oct. 16, 2002, is listed in my sig.

btw, my <Temp3> shows N/A.

**Edit

Just a follow up. I just decided now to mess around with the HDD_Temp_ID value of 194...

with a value of 1, I get 0.0 C, 3 I get 191.0 C... if I find any other interesting values, I'll post my findings...

Alright, I promised results...

Here's what I have so far... yeah I know it isn't much, but it's a start. Its getting pretty damn boring changing a number, opening a program, IGR, seeing the new value, repeat as necessary... so I only tested up to 23. Note, not all numbers 1-23 are listed in the list, any that aren't listed showed N/A as a result.

1st column = HDD_Temp_ID value, 2nd column = <Temp3> result

1 - 0.0
3 - 191.0
4 - 116.0
5 - 0.0
7 - 0.0
9 - 34.0
11 - 0.0
12 - 116.0

Out of all that, my only promising bit of data is the value of 9 showing 34.0 C initially. To test this the only why I know how other than a thermometer, I started playing Time Splitters 2, which is on the HDD, and then I IGR'd back to the dash and the temp didn't change at all. Mind you I only played it for a couple minutes, but still, the HDD was in use, therefore generating heat.

Well, just having let it sit for a few minutes trying other values and typing this post, I went back to 9 from another value just to see if something changed, and voila! 35.0 C. By touching the top of the drive, it feels warm, but I can't be 100% certain about 35 C.

I left the Xbox off over dinner, and I just came back now and turned it on. Still shows 35 C even after having been off for 30 minutes or so. To me that doesn't look too promising, but I know nothing about the heat dissipation inside an Xbox, or a HDD either for that matter.

I know from watching the MB & CPU temps, they go up from 35 & 40 (respectively) right away as soon as I turn on the box and then sit at about 45 & 50 (respectively) after having been on a while or having played a game.

For those of you who had this work right away with the value of 194 and a reasonable <Temp3> output, does the temp fluctuate slowly? Rapidly? At all? Or does it just stay constant no matter what you're putting the HDD through?

I guess that's all for now. If anyone knows more about this, by all means...

Thanks!

I kept my setting at it's inital value (194), and the temperature would refresh to a new reading every 30 seconds or so. The readings I got seemed realistic too, so I'm going to assume my SMART HDD read-outs are working as they should.

The reading started out at 27 degrees, I played a game of Soul Calibur 2 and rebooted, it then showed 28 degrees.

It would be nice if Evox did release some sort of list explaining what the numbers mean though.

tongue.gif), but this is just bugging me for some reason b/c I don't know for sure if I have it set right. I posted this problem in Evox's bug forum at MaxConsole. Nothing from there yet, but we'll see. Hopefully they'll respond with some info about this.

Dreamcazman: Does 27 C seem like a realistic value to you though?

I'm not too sure what a average temp is for one of the WD's, it does seem fairly realistic though. The drive doesn't get very hot to touch after it's in use for a while.

At least it seems more realistic than 50 degrees that some people have reported. In my experience, HDD's don't ever get as hot as CPU's.

Although having said that, 27 degrees is also a little cool.  I dunno  uhh.gif  blink.gif  tongue.gif

either that # is way off, or you should use your xbox to cook on.

Operating Temperature and Humidity
 Temperature 2 5°C to 55°C (41°F to 131°F)
 Humidity 5-95% RH non-condensing
33°C (maximum wet bulb)
 Thermal Gradient 20°C/hour (maximum)
 Humidity Gradient 20%/hour (maximum)

This is the info from www.westerndigital.com for my WD1200BB. I am pissed off that I am failing to get it working. Is it a bios issue? I have tried D6, D6 MP, 4977, 4976.02 and 4978.03

If evox displays N/A, then it most likely does not have a temp sensor ohmy.gif

Is that for the HDD or the Xbox itself?

Well, since this entire thread is about the HD Temp, we will go with that wink.gif
