thats a bit tight fisted...

I would never go with a company that thinks it should decide what i should use my connection for. I wouldn't put up with that for ten minutes.

Dude its time to shop around, look for DSL.  If they are blocking your ports you need to tell them to piss off.  However you can get a router with port forwarding and take one port (say 2111) and forward it to port 21 on your xbox.

Most ISPs will unblock the port if you call and ask nicely.

Your ftp client is using PASV or passive ftp.  Disable it and see if that works.

LOL.... welcome to Evo-X and it's inability to handle PASV mode.

Try Media X Menu 0.9m. It can handle a change to the server port. It also works fine in PASV mode.

Port 21 is the "telnet" port, i.e. the Command Channel. The FTP then determines the port for data transfers., which is usually random. There is also translation through routers to change the IPs seen by each side to keep things straight.

Trob, if you read my post carefully I am using port forwarding.  I'm forwarding external publick ip port 2121 to internal port 21 and external port 20 to internal port 20.  Yes it is setup for NAT I have a linksys router.

This is killing me.  I'm not a newb on routers, I have a sonicwall pro 100 at work that I've setup with 4 servers behind it (mail/ftp/www etc).  Something is not right.. it's either the cable company or the way evox ftp works.

Are you ftp-ing to your routers external ip address?  From what I saw you were using 192.168.100.2.

QUOTE (trob @ Jun 25 2003, 02:20 PM)
No, telnet is port 23 not 21.  Port 21 is reserved for ftp only.  Since you are tiring to reach your xbox from outside your router you will have to either use NAT or Port fowarding.  Port forwarding you actually ftp you routers outside address and it fowards the port to the specified ip address.  NAT, network address translation you map an outside ip address to devices on your private network.  The 192.168.x.x ip subnet is reserved for private subnets.  They are non-routable so you can not reach them over the internet.

Yeah, I **KNOW** that.

Geez. It was a "generic" description - Port 21 is the COMMAND CHANNEL, used much like TELNET.

I was just describing the WAY it is used: textual commands are send back and forth through port 21, and the FTP server sends file and listing data through "another" port.

But silly me, what do I know? I've only written MXM, with it's FTP Server, HTTP Clients, etc., etc... I've got an FTP server that has a working PASV mode. I've got an FTP server that beats Evo-X in upload/download times.  dry.gif

Good job, sorry but I just wanted to clear things up.  Anyways your MXM, evox, that not the problem here.  He is having networking issues.  The only port you need to pass thru is 21.  You can change your ftp client to use 2121 and foward your routher port 2121 to your xbox.

that's what it's showing in the detail but it's the the ip I'm trying to ftp too.

What?
If you are using the same subnet on both your work pc or whatever and your home network you may have routing issues.

my home subnet is 192.168.1.x
my work subnet is 192.168.100.x

Remember I can telnet.  so it's not a problem with ip configurations.

I might try MXM tonight.

btw, anybody know what the commands are that are usable via telnet? is there a reference somewhere?

BenJeremy: does the data port always have to be 20?
