Correct me if I am wrong, but mode 3 means you turned the chip off for XB Live.

Regular bios = Ummoded. It is the feature used for XB Live because it checks for moded systems.
The regular bios, (Unless you reflash the regular bios) will not run any dashboard beside the M$ one, nore will it play backups.

Did you make shur the file with the xbe extention had been named default.xbe.
If it's not default.xbe rename it for the boot cd.

i heard u also need to completely erase the cd-rw, even if its new.  make sure ur running the chip on, not familiar with matrix mod chips, and i dont hav cd probs cuz i hav a samsung, but make sure ur not on a setting that isnt supposed to 'boot the original ms dash' or 'be able to run live'  thats not what u want, u want to make sure the damn mod chip is on.  not sure if theres anything else...

hmmm....works now.  it was the cd-rw's i was using.  i went out and bought some sony cd-rw's, cuz my friend said those will work, and what do you kno, they did!!

now i just need to see how to install evo x
