wow my head hurts from all this thinking, lol
If your bios is 4973, then I dont think it has the
clock bug. I think it was 4972 that had it. But
again I am going on memory here, lol.
If the clock is of no issue, the xbox should have no
trouble booting from the DVD drive.

Anyway it may be easier if we could talk on the phone
and brain storm what is happening, I will pm you,
and we can work ou the phone thing, just check your PM
messages.

I am having a similar problem.  Error #16

This is what happened.
I put on a new dashboard.  Restarted xbox, works.
Edited evox.ini, uploaded and rebooted.  Now i get error 16 dashboard files / settings incorrect.

Tried booting off of my bootdisk, to upload my original .ini file.  it goes to the error screen but the screen is split in half diagonally.  Plugged in another xbox hard drive.  boots fine.

I have tried booting up with the other hard drive and then switching back to my original while it's on, but in the ftp, it shows files from the original one(my friends), not my new one(the busted hard drive).  I can't upload or delete files.  I don't want to reformat the drive, because it was working before and I have a lot of games and stuff on it.

So I need to somehow delete or modify the evox.ini file.

I've read posts on error 16.  I don't believe it's a clock issue so please don't respond with clock answers.  I have also tried changing the jumper settings on my hard drive.  No luck.  Remember, I can't boot to a boot disk.

any help is MUCH appreciated!

I fixed this.

I swapped my hard drive into another modded xbox. when it booted i got error # 13 instead of 16. I put in my bootdisk, ftp'd to it, and booted. everything is fine.

A couple of interesting points. I used my hard drive and DVD drive in both machines. they are both xbox 1.0s. the modchips were ordered about 2 months apart. The hard drive and dvd drive in one box gives error 16 and won't boot from a bootdisk. in the other box it gives error 13 and boots from the exact same bootdisk.

this may help some other people troubleshoot.

Thx armstrong dave your solution worked for me perfectly.   I had installed Avalaunch dash  (had EVOx previously) and didnt rename the default.xbe to evoxdash.xbe.  and had the same problem as your Error 16.  Put the HD into my other xbox that had tsop flashed and you were right got error 13 and put evox  boddt disk, renamed my default.xbe to avalauch.xbe. And all is well.
