A few question for you dry.

Is this the orignal Hard Drive?

Is it locked?

Has the Xbox been unpowered for more than 4 hours?

What error # does it give you?

Strange, I dont understand how editing the evox.ini file
on the HD would result in the Xbox not being able to
boot from the DVD drive. The error 16 refers to it not
being able to load a dash board or related files. But
that should not stop it from booting from the DVD drive.
The only thing I can think of that would stop it from
booting from the DVD drive, is if you had a bios on the
X2 that is set to skip the DVD drive detect/boot.
If I remeber correctly the Evox boot CD you are using
worked on this Xbox before this happened, Is that corect?
What bios is installed on your X2? also did you rename
your xboxdash.xbe to anything other than that?
Will It boot an orignal Xbox game DVD?
Just trying to narrow down where the prob is
when booting from the DVD drive.

dont give up, lol we will figure it out I'm sure.
I should be around most of the day here, so
I will check back here often to see if we can work
it out
Also I dont think putting the drive in the PC will
help to edit anything as the PC wont be able to
understand the File system on the Xbox HD.

Thats why I was asking if the Xbox had lost power for a long time.
I have read that if it loses it clock setting the first thing it tries to
do is load the clock setting screen, which skips booting anything
altogether be it the HD or DVD. but you sead it hasn't lost power.
I dont think it is entirely your evox.ini file causing the prob,
because it wont boot orignal disk either. My first guess is the clock
and then if that isnt it, possibly a prob with DVD rom itself
or maybe a IDE cable or power cable. Do you have a freind with an Xbox you could try your DVD drive in his and see what happens.
I know I saw a thread on here that someone had the prob with
clock settings and not being able to boot because he had an unlocked HD. I will do a search and see what I can find on it. the easy thing at this point might be to try the dvd swap with another box, just to narrow it
down. It doesnt sound like a bios prob, because you said you havnt flashed it.

Anyway I'll post back with my finds on the clock prob in a bit

Here is a post I found with a little info on the clock issue

http://forums.xbox-s...=46849&hl=clock

If there is a way to disable the mod chip, try that and see what happens.
If your drive is locked and has the MS dash on the HD it should boot.

If it is the clock and bios issue, prob the easyest way would to reflash it with a programer,  and update the bios.
If you have a friend with an X2 you might be able to
do a hot swap and then flash it from evox

the guy on this site has a programer for sale for
$25
http://www.dssforyou...ite/x2_lite.htm
or he might let you send him your chip

As for recovering it with a PC is, I dont think you
can. but I have heard people talking about
cloning a drive with norton ghost. But you would
need a drive to clone, lol

The need to reflash is not the because of a bad flash but
rather the bios on the chip wont let the Xbox boot without
the time being set. That is the reason to update the bios to d6.
The D6 bios will boot even if the clock isnt set. You will have no
probs with the chip and the D6 bios, in fact I would recomend
getting one with the color mod. Like D6 red, D6 blue, etc.
Then when the Xbox boots the big Green X you normaly see
would be red or blue, depending on which bios you used.
That way you can always tell which bios is loading, (D6 or MS)
and if the chip is working.
As for putting your HD into anoter Xbox, I'm not sure that
would work if the drive is locked. but it couldnt hurt to try
it.

I was thinking of formatting an empty 15 gig drive in another modded xbox with evox hdd installer or Slayer's and then make sure there is a correctly renamed copy of original xboxdash.xbe in the drive root.

I'm just not sure if my xbox can boot that disk then cause it's unlocked- is XE2 LE modchip capable to bypass the protection even when the clock is unset?! If it boots I could then flash the bios from evolution-x! That color mod bios idea is great.

OK this is what we think is happing
1, the clock isnt set so the Xbox wants to set the time
but it cant because the xboxdash.xbe isnt there or
  is renamed.
2. The Xbox cant boot with Mod chip on because of a
glitch in it's bios that wont let it get buy the clock
   not being set.
3. The Xbox cant boot with the Mod chip disabled because
we think the xboxdsh.xbe is missing or mis named.
4.If you set up a new HD on another box, you wont be
able to get past the clock issue still. With the chip on
it will get hung up at the fact the clock isnt set. Just like
it does now.  with the chip off the it wont boot from the
MS bios because the HD is not locked. You wont be able
to lock the new drive in another box, and still have it boot
in yours. I believe each HD key is based on the the mother
board it was connected to when it was locked.

So I think reflashing the X2 Lite is the only way of to save it
If you have a friend with a Xbox who is willing to let you install
the chip in his Xbox, you could then flash it from evox. or if
he also has an X2 Lite, you could just plug yours into his connector
and flash it from evox.

The MS bios will not boot from a unlocked drive, that I'm sure of.
With the mod chip on it would be able to but it cant get past the
clock setting because of the glitch in it's bios

If you have the HD key from your Xbox, you might able to lock it
with PC method of doing it.
what mod chip does the other Xbox have installed?

as I understand it, the clock setting is pulled up from onboard chip,( i think)
because it will never get as far as DVD or HD.
I had read a post awhile back where someone had a good install
of evox and the ms dash on the HD, but the glitch in the bios was
what hung him up. If I remember correctly he had a replacement drive
that wasnt locked, and he no longer had the orignal. I wish I could find that post
to see how he ended up geting it working.
Anyway there was definatly a bug in the Xecuter bios. I think it was 4972,
but I dont recall exactly. Just messing the files on the Xbox HD shouldnt
stop it from booting from cd, the only thing that would cause that other
then faulty hardware would be this clock issue. At this point I'm guessing thats
the problem. It's the only logical reason if all hardware is working.

Ok. Now I have more information... did hdd hot swap trick and extracted the evox.ini file.

This is what I have done:

I've renamed msxboxdash.xbe to MSxboxdash.xbe.
Evox xboxdash.xbe should still be in it's place.

I've changed the evox.ini to point MSdashboard = "c:MSxboxdash.xbe".
Also, I've commented out the line  Item "Flash BIOS",ID_Flash_Bios under the section "System Utils"

Now... the questions that rise are these:
Are the xbox filenames case sensitive?
Can I rename the file using WinHex (filenames have same length!)
or do I cause more corruption on HD?
Can I safely edit the ini file so it would function like original?

Anyway, maybe it still won't boot because of the clock issue!

I'm going to make a new thread of this question too cause I got more information about what happened.

Here's my ini file edited from winhex dump:

Please Help! Won't Boot Even From Cd
« Reply #14 on: April 27, 2003, 05:36:00 AM »

First of all if you have an X2 Lite, the bios on the mod chip will
look for evoxdash.xbe to boot. The MS bios looks for xboxdash.xbe.
xboxdash.xbe is the retail name. You should not have to change it,
just point evox.ini to that name. Just so you know, the evox dash
does not rely on any of the orignal files, including the xboxdash.xbe
The only thing the evoxdash.xbe needs to function is evoxdash.xbe
and evox.ini How did you hot swap HD, with another Xbox?

anyway if you can rename the MS dash back to it orignal name
(xboxdash.xbe) and boot with the mod chip off, then in theory
it should then work. The MS bios is loading, the HD is locked, and
the MS dash is named correctly(xboxdash.xbe) it should be able
to set the clock.
