Pretty: XBMP Dash and xISO
Utilitarian: EvoX and SimpleX

Exactly, its a utility. 90% of its options you don't use on a daily basis. It's a great way to get a modded xbox up and running and from there you can have it as an option. Seems like everyone's just too stubborn or lazy to change. If you didnt use your box for music or videos at all I might buy that excuse but honestly what else are you doing with it? its not like there are many good games(a whole new can of worms)

I can have evox on for a week straight

I'm not sure why you'd want to leave it on for a week but ok. The only time xbmp has ever frozen on me is when im playing videos or mp3s, which evox doesnt do in the first place and is likely more a problem of the video or music file then the program.

Just curious, defend your dashboard

Give our opinion of EvolutionX and how we like it, and then hear your excuses of why it sucks? That's not a healthy debate...

hard to freeze when you only use it for 3 seconds while your trying to find a better application.

apoc, you hardly even gave it a chance.

right now i use evox as default dash... and i'm actually in xbmp more than evox, i'm probably going to make the switch.. moslty becasue of the filezilla services that evox does not provide (and the obvious other media services)... what i really want to see is USB mouse capabilities and remote manage funtion so i can execute movies and mp3'z from my computer since i totally switch over to the xbox as my entertainment center...

Who said it sucks? I use it for a lot of things. I'm pretty sure thats exactly how debates work. You give your side, I give mine.

I used it for 3 months, until the first day xbmp came out with the dashboard option and i havn't looked back

its definately the way to go if you're the type who has their box apart on a daily basis and you've given a couple other reasons why it would make a good dash. None that apply to me but I can see your point

I dont understand why everyone thinks evox is so great. Ive since changed everything over to xbmp. Now i can do absolutely everything from one program. IGR you might say but bioses do a much better job of that anyway.

Just curious, defend your dashboard

I guess it's just because evox was there first, so people got used to it.  Then along came NexGen and xbmp, but people tend to stick with what they know, unless there's a good reason not to.

umm, evox is not supposed to play videos or mp3's, so stop using that as your big argument.  And if you only had XBMP freeze once or twice (especially since you said you've been using it for all that time), you either recompiled your own version, are the luckiest man alive, or use your xbox once a month to play one thing and then shutdown.

Network navigation in XBMP is still a game of Russian Roulette.  Scan through one dir and jump back, cringe, okay it didn't freeze. Phew. Repeat, oh shit, time to hard reset.  That's applies to all the networking standards that XBMP uses (and the internal file managing), albeit some are less buggy than others.

Doing just about anything repeatedly, or quickly in XBMP, at one point or another will cause a crash eventually (and yes, I have been through many builds, I'd wager more than you anyway).  If you want to sit down and watch an entire movie, or listen to a set playlist, it's great.  But jumping around, sampling alot of different things will only lead to trouble.  Hey, sometimes I can scream through files and folders for a whole hour just fine, but sooner or later, it'll wreck

Of course, you are entitled to your opinion, and what works for you, well, works for you.  But asking directly for others to 'defend' their dash from the get go, only invites this sort of thing.

jasonmvt, COMPLETELY agree. Xbmp has froze on me many times, and I had to do hard resets too. And no, its not from user error.

I've tried nearly every cvs build since they've started releasing them. Don't assume.

and you still maintain you only had it freeze once or twice? laugh.gif

even frodo and other's would (and have) admit(ted) to very frequent or random crashes on the early (and some later builds) in the forum or on irc; not to mention the myriad of other features slowly added that were always crashing.  MANY releases contained critical bugs, that had to be immediately recompiled.  Look, I'm not going to turn this into a 'bash XBMP' thread, but it is a widely known fact that it freezes quite often.  If I, or Shanafan, was the only person to have this sort of trouble, I could see your point.  You are obviously in way over your level of involvement with this.  I don't claim to be an expert on XBMP, but even I can see a work-in-progress when it's in front of me.  It IS getting better, day by day.  I'm certain there will come a time when the program lives up to the expectations that you place upon it, but that time has still yet to arrive.

That has more to do with it's functionality as a media player then as dashboard

By saying it had never freezed on me I was referring to the latest builds from the past month or 2. Not in the entire history of the xbmp

I don't use any of the newer features, but from what I've seen in forums there are some problems. I've never experienced them myself
