Xbox Ftp. Yes I Know, I,m Tried Of The
« on: February 14, 2003, 05:59:00 PM »

For the love of God, please someone help me get this thing working. I want to ftp my xbox.
This is what I can tell you so far. I'm using evolutionx 1.8.458 on a cdrw.
It works fine. I haven't updated to a newer version because I don't want to have to mess with anything on the harddrive. This version uses a menu.ini, instead of evox.ini. I'll post a copy of it in the post so you'll know what it looks like.

My pc IP (these of course are not the real ip's)
IP - 169.254.123.456
Subnet Mask - 255.255.0.0
Defualt Gateway - (( this feild is blank on the pc ))  <---woundering if this is where the problem is?

Xbox IP
My xbox automaticly gets a ip when ever I boot the system. It changes every time I reboot.
This is what it looks like.
IP - 169.254.456.789 - AUTO    ((ip not real))
100/Full Duplex
Static IP: 0.0.0.0
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0

I noticed the IP that is auto assigned to the xbox is no where close to the pc's IP.
Do they need to be closer?
Since the xbox has auto assigne IP do I still need to fill in the Static IP, and Default Gateway?
If so, what do I use, the xbox ip (auto), or the pc's IP + 1?

What ever I try, I can't ping the xbox.
I have a v1.0 xbox
openbox mod / executor's bio's
I'm connecting the pc to the xbox with a crossover cable. (It's a crossover cable).

Here's what the menu.ini looks like.

#tDoBIOS=1,
#tDoFlashBIOS=2,
#tDoDash=3,
#tDoLaunchMenu=4,
#tDoReboot=5,
#tDoNetwork=6,

ok man, this is what I've found so far. You cannot change the settings from a disc (of course, because how could you save the menu.ini file). So, what I needed to do was burn a new cdrw with all the settings exactly right in the menu.ini file. You need to set the default gateway to ur Pc's IP address. And you need to set Static to ON. I don't think you can do this on your menu.ini, you may find this as a good chance to upgrade evox, while ur at it. In an evox.ini file, the Networking section of you evox.ini should look like this:

[Network]

SetupNetwork = Yes
StaticIP = YES
Ip = 169.254.123.789
Subnetmask = 255.255.255.0
Defaultgateway = 169.254.123.456
DNS1 = 0.0.0.0
DNS2 = 0.0.0.0

Also, be sure that:
1) You have no firewall running on your PC.
2) Your PC has a static IP and that it is the same as the default gateway. A STATIC IP IS ONE THAT DOES NOT CHANGE. A DYNAMIC IP IS ONE THAT IS ASSIGNED BY THE SERVER AND AUTOMATICALLY DETECTS, CAUSING IT TO CHANGE TIME BY TIME. Just FYI wink.gif

ok, I think the best thing to do is maybe write a really detailed tutorial on networking xbox and pc... I will try to write one, but no promises on how soon... first let me see if I can find a coyp of 1.8.458 . I will try it out and see if that is the problem, cuz I really can't understand were some of these problems are coming from? I will post as soon as I can... But really, I have to say this again... would it be so bad? to:

A) Try the latest version of evox? (you dont have to change anything on the HD, just make a cdrw with it to see if it resolves the problem or not)

and/or

cool.gif Go buy a Linksys, Netgear, SMC or other inexpensive router... save yourself some pain and trouble. buy a 4 port cable modem/dsl router. It has 5 ports. one to connect to your high speed internet (even if you dont have high speed internet, get this type anyway) and four more to connect to your pc, xbox and what have you. Configure everything for dhcp and be happy...

Inorder to use the later evolution's you have to rename the xboxdash.xbe on the xbox hard drive. Then add anoter one so evolution can boot from the new xbe. Am I right?

the only thing you have to do if you want to boot to the new evox (via CD-RW or DVD) is to burn a CD-RW or DVD with the new version on it and the evox.ini configured the way you want... You don't have to have anything changed on the hard drive. For that matter, you don't have to have any files on the hard drive. if you install a brand new, unformatted hard drive, it will still work, formatted, still works, formatted with system files, still works, and finally system files and same or other versions of evox, still works, no problem...

show what the evox.ini should look like for the newest version of evolution x.
Show me what it should look like if I wanted to boot it from the cdrw and change nothing on the hd.
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That should be fine, just be sure to change the ip address and default gateway to match your network.

follow this EXACTLY and it'll work..never failed...

How to network your PC and give it and your xbox an IP:

What you need: 56k- one crossover cable Cable/DSL- hub/router or switch and three RJ-45 Ethernet cables

1. For 56k: Run a Crossover Cable from your Xbox to your PC Ethernet card

2. For Cable/DSL Run a standard Ethernet cable (RJ-45) from your cable/DSL modem to you UPLINK Slot on your hub/Router. Run a RJ-45 from your hub to your Xbox, then run another from the hub to your Ethernet card. (Do not place the cords right next to each other.)

3. After that is done go to your PC desktop and right click on my network places, then click properties, then right click on High Speed, or LAN, and click properties.

4. Click verify IP address and type the following: IP Address: 192.168.000.001 Subnet: 255.255.255.000 and then default gateway (optional):192.168.000.001 then click OK.

5. By doing that you gave your computer an IP Address to always use instead of getting one automatically, so it’ll give one to the Xbox in the future.

Flash FXP:

1. Download this program from www.download.com

2. Open it up and click on “Site Manager” then click “new site”

3. Name the new site whatever you want, (My Xbox, Xbox, etc.)

4. Go to IP enter 192.168.000.004, or whatever you made your xboxs ip

5. The port should always be 21

6. Go to username and right xbox, and the same for your password (If you already set one)

7. Hit the “Options” tab and click off passive mode COMPLETELY.

8. Apply and don't connect if you didn't give your xbox an IP. If you did, apply then connect.

9. (If you didn't give your xbox and Ip yet) Go to your xbox and change the ip to whatever you have it in FlashFXP, save and exit, reboot and try to connect.

Thanks for the repleys SumDumGuy and MatrixMan.
I'm going to try that with the ini file like that.

Another question. in the evox.ini file it says,
MSDashBoard = "c:msxboxdash.xbe"
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this mean I can't use the MS dash unless I change it on the hd to say msxboxdash.xbe?

Never mind about the question above. I feel stupid asking it now.
I now have evolutionx 1.8.3285.
It boots without adding anything to the harddrive just like you said.
This is what I have so far.

PC
IP - 192.168.0.1
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Default - 192.168.0.1

XBOX
Ethernet MAC Address 00:12:34:ab:cd  <----- Not sure if I should give out the real #.
Setup Network - YES
Use static IP - YES
IP - 192.168.0.3
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.0.1
DNS - 0.0.0.0
DNS - 0.0.0.0

I'm using a crossover cable from pc to xbox.
I start off by turning off my xbox.
I then change my pc's ip to 192.168.0.1, along with the other two values.
I reboot the computer.
Zone Alarm dectect the  change, I select trusted zone. (two choices here, trusted, or internet zone.)
I then shut down zone alarm.
Now I boot xbox with evolutionx v 1.8.3285 on cdrw.
I go to settings and see the above values for xbox.
I then try to ping xbox, keep getting request timed out.

Here's my evox.ini:
