Which Router?

I'm sure Xbox Live! will work fine on any router.  For any other purpose you don't need a router, a hub/switch/crossover cable works fine.

For routers, I recommend any LinkSys product.  Easy to setup and reliable.

I can't say that it is the best one... or why... but I can say that I have a Linksys BEFSR41. It's a 4 port and I have a 4 port switch hooked up... If only it had been a 5 port router biggrin.gif I am extremely happy with it... Never had any problems with it... Some of the guys I work with have NetGear routers that they think are the best but they have had a few problems... I don't know if it was the routers or the users  blink.gif haha, but anyway, personally, I would stick with a brand name. You wont save but $10 to buy a no name and you may or may not pay that $10 in grief with a no name... Just my $.02

One thing is for sure... buying a router is a much better way to go then buying a 2nd nic and trying to get that to work...  wink.gif

True a switch will work just as well, but then you have to deal with the external network vs the internal network (cable/dsl modem) dhcp and the xbox static ip... I think it is easier for most users just to get a router and set everything for dhcp? But it all depends...

And again... Even a switch or Hub is better than getting a 2nd nic for your pc biggrin.gif

Most of the cusumer/small bussiness entry level router will work fine.  Most feature that the high end router have most home users will never need or for that matter even know what they are for.

The main question I have for you is what type of line (internet) are you using.  If you have cable or DSL most of the standard routers on the market will do fine.  As long as the ISP supplies the modem.  These models are Ethernet to Ethernet routers.  

Some models (more expensive) include the DSL modem built in.  The netopia and Speedstream make models that (I am not fond of the speedstreams) are examples of these.

Cisco makes a Cable modem router 900u series.  Road Runner uses these for there business class connection.  

It really depends on your situation which router is right.  Are you looking for a DSL/CABLE router without the modem? Do you want wireless support?  I have set up many Linksys and Dlink model so I can say they will be fine.  

If you let me know what your goals are I can recommend a model.

Actually linksys does have nice equipment but for routers i'm an smc fan... much cheaper and smaller.... plus great web interface setup...
either smc or linksys would be just fine...

Linksys royally screwed me on a router that I bought from them (it died after 2 months and they refused to do anything about it).

I recommend Netgear or Dlink, 2 GREAT companies that you can't go wrong with.

I use the Netgear RP614 router, it works 100% with LIVE, and no configuration on my part.

What model of router was it.  Just curious but is the unit still under their warrenty?

If it is still under warrenty I may be able to help get a RMA for the unit.  What went wrong with it?

Personally, I would have just taken it to back to where I bought it and got a replacement from them... I have found that if you push them most retailers will do it no matter what the deal is.

As far as Linksys service. Not sure why you had such a problem but I tell you what they did for me... Friend of mine bought a linksys router... he didnt have it on a surge protector and his house got hit by a whopper of a surge... The loss of the router was the least of his worries. Either way it took out the router in syle. Melted the wires from the brick upto the router. He went and bought another brand new router, and this one had only been like a few weeks old.

I felt bad for the guy so, I took the router and got it swapped at a local retailer. They don't know what they are doing... They just ship it back to linksys... eitherway, I got a new router. But that was just the router, I had no idea what to do about the power cord??? I mean it was melted beyond recognition? I called up linksys to ask if I could BUY a replacement power supply. The guy asked why I wanted to? I made up some cockamamie storie about a friend borrowing it and plugging the cord into the wrong device and blowing it up. Told him the router was fine, just needed a new PS. I said, I know it's my fault so I will BUY it!!! He said, don't worry about it and shipped me a replacement for free... biggrin.gif Then he had a Free replacement router!

This was an old 56k router from '96 or so.

They may have changed their service since then, but I am one to hold a grudge.

I am perfectly happy with Netgear at the moment (if it ever dies, then I may not be, but I assume they'll do good).

It just died, suddenly and for no reason.

I actually liked that router (held four modems for a total of 224 theoretical kbps).
