Can you ping the Xbox? If so then then the NIC is fine

I wouldn't write off the NIC just yet, have you tried a different network cable?

This has worked for a few people
Give it a go

Go into your PC CONTROL PANEL

NETWORK

Highlight the card connected to your XBOX
Click Properties
Click the ADVANCE TAB
Then click on CONNECTION TYPE
In the Value window it proberly says AutoSense
Set the VALUE to 10Base T Full Duplex

click OK to everything and then reboot your PC
Now try to connect again
My static IP is set to NO

yeah a direct link between 2 xbox'es needs a crossover cable....
