Ftp Through The Internet To Xbox
« on: January 08, 2003, 09:27:00 AM »

I've searched around and couldn't find any more info, maybe I'm looking in the wrong place. If so, please, no flames.

Ok, I've got a 1.0 xbox with a matrix chip and latest Evox dashboard. The xbox is connected to a linksys router with a DSL connection.

Is it possible to FTP into the xbox from outside my local network? I would like to FTP in from work or friend's houses to move files around.  What are the issues with security and firewalls?

Thanks so much for any help you can provide.

But this does mean you are leaving your xbox on 24/7 which seems a bit much.. Remember it was built to be a gaming system, not a pc.. It isn't made to be up for days on end.

Thanks Wikkid.... you guys here at the Scene are the best!  Especially Opjose and Slayer!

I've never opened/fowarded a port on the router.  I've seen it in the menus for the router.  I take it that this bypasses the firewall, kinda like a DMZ but only for a specific port?   And if there are no other FTP applications running on the networked pcs... we should be safe from any intrusion?

Thanks again!

Thanks Snart!  Everything worked as you described. In fact, it was much easier than I anticipated.  I really appreciate your reply as well as everyone else that helped us out.
