i have a stupid question,
when you lock the hdd can you still copy/add/delete/modify the contents of the drive?

I purchased XBOX live but did not have time to lock the hdd, will probably be doing it this weekend.
How long does it take to do?

                                    The original HD is locked, a replacing HD not.
The Modchip BIOS won't give a damn but when you want to boot from the original BIOS you will have to lock the HD because the bios will check that.

Locking the HD has no effect on FTPing,moving, adding, deleting files with your boxplorer or whatever

Hello 2000ache,

Since you have successfully locked your hd, I would like to ask a few question about locking hd.

I have a 120gb HD 5400rpm from Maxtor, but it does not seem to be lockable.  I tried both atapwd and unlockx and both said it is not locakble.  What hd (successfully locked) you are using now in your xb?

I heard that locking is chipset/bios dependent, so what is the config of your pc which you did the locking on?

My final question is do you need to do the locking when the hd is empty (zeroed or new)?  I tried to lock hd with files on it.

I locked a 40GB 7200rpm Maxtor, serienr 6L040J2 (D740X series).
(I tried three maxtor drives, one of them wasn't lockable)

Both atapwd and unlockx identified the drive as lockable. I locked the drive using
unlockx (version 2.0) on a AMD XP1700+, Via KT266a chipset - Abit AK77Pro mainboard).

You can lock the drive AFTER you've put it in your xbox, put Evox on it
and run the backup command from evox. So the drive is not empty anymore
Also, when installing a drive, if it is a new one, you don't need to zero it, otherwise
you need to zero it before installing it.

Hope this clears some things uo.

I just formatted one of the used drives I had, removed the two partititions it had on it, dropped it in the XBox, repartitioned it, reinstalled the necessary files, and it worked.

Maybe just dumb luck... but I never had to rezero it.

I basically have the hd set up and running fine with evox on the xbox no problem.  My hd is Maxtor 120G, model number 4G120J6.  I tried to lock it with unlockx and it said it is not lockable.  I guess it must be that the drive is not lockable afterall.  I heard from a lot of people that not all Maxtor drive is lockable, so tough luck for me.

The reason I asked your PC config is that I am not sure if the locking is PC related.  Since you are also using VIA chipset, so I am 95% sure that it must be my hd does is not lockable.  I am using XP1600+, VIA KT333, Gigabyte GA-7VRXP.  I think I will try a WD drive later, it seems as though all WD drive are lockable.

you might want to double check that man i have a wd 120 gig 7200 rpm 8 mbcache and cant get it to lock for nothing.
