Xbox Transfer Speeds (flash Fxp)
« on: October 24, 2002, 12:56:00 PM »

You didnt mention what speed your hub is. if it's a 10mbit hub, it will run at 10mbit. If it's a 10/100mbit hub, and ANY 10mbit device is in it, the entire thing will run at 10mbit.

I'm unsure if a switch is required for full duplex or not. could be.

I dont know about you guys, But I am getting 15 megs transfer a sec. I am not kidding,It takes me 20 minutes to copy 4 gigs!! did it 3 times in a row to make sure it was not a fluke.

A 50 meg file takes like 3 sec, I could literaly run games of my pc drive if my evox-dash could map to it.

All I got is a regular 10/100 base-t 3com card, with a 10/100 router attached to a 10/100 8 port switch

linksys 10/100 router =100$  (canadian)
Aopen 10/100 switch=100$   (canadian)

Cheers

Yes a switch is need for full duplex, you can only get half duplex if you are using a hub.

Hub suck ass anyways just throw it away and get a switch way better speeds all around!

Use a crossover cable, straight from xbox to pc and eliminate all hubs, routers, switches, etc.  It doesn't get any faster.

What's a crossover cable you ask?  It is a special Cat-5 cable that allows for direct connection of two pc's. Info here:

I have a netgear rt314 and I get transfers TO the xbox around 6-7000kbps.

I noticed the tremendes difference when I changed the HD to a Seagate Barracuda IV (80gig, 7500rpm)

Just to let you know that the max speed for a 10/100 card is about 11Mbytes/sec. If you are transfering about 4 gig in 20 mins then that is only about 3.4Mbytes/sec....

Not that impressive really.

I have found that Flash FXP sucks. I was using that and getting less then 2 Mbps rates. I am now using Wsftp Pro. After tweaking the transmission buffer size to 4096 (default was 512) I now get between 20-30 Mbps. That is bits per second. So that equates to 2.5-3.75 MBps (Mega Bytes per second). That is very impressive for PC to Xbox transfers. Just remember that for every byte there are 8 bits. I think a lot of people get confused with this when quoting transfer rates. In my case I am getting about 20-30% of the total bandwidth available for 100 Mbps Ethernet. You also have to realize that this is only using one thread. If you were to open a few session of Wsftp I bet you could get up to 60 Mbps. I will do some testing later. I hope this helps.

Not sure where you learned about math but 4GB in 20 minutes is 3.3 MBps or 26.6 Mbps. You people need to realize that there are 8 bits in a byte and you can't use the terms interchangeably. Remember little b is Mega bits and big B is Mega Bytes. Granted 26 Mbps is a far cry from 100 Mbps Ethernet but it is not bad when doing a single transfer. I hope this helps.

Where do you tweak the transmission buffer
In WSftp pro?
I'm using that in win xp

I switched from using Flash FXP to Windows Commander and my speed got 10 times faster. So I recommend trying with WC.

Under options/Advanced. Change transmission size from 512 to 4096. The reason this helps is you are never leaving your local Ethernet so the packet size can be the Ethernet maximum of 4096. I hope this helps.
