Hd Replacment Failure :-(
« on: October 22, 2002, 02:34:00 PM »

first, put the orig hd back in and see if things still work.  It might be something other than your hd.  If it does work with the old hd, make sure you can boot evolution x from a cd-rw.  if thats all ok, make sure your new hd is set the same as the old hd (master, slave or cableselect).  if after putting the xbox back together it still doesn't work, and you've verified that you aren't shorting out anything when you put the xbox back together, make sure that the hard drive isn't faulty.  install it in your pc.  after that, i dunno - let us know the brand and make of the drive.

thx for the reply. Actually at the beginning the xbox would start as normal and everything worked then occasionaly the problem started at random startups, and now it wont start proparly at all, not even with the old HD  mad.gif

The new HD is a IBM deskstar 41Gb

Could there be a glitch in a solderpoint maybe?

thx again

Does it turn on and off two times then stay on with the blinking red and green?  What kind of modchip do you have?  My first guess would be a bad solder point since that usually happens when the Xbox can't boot to a good bios.

I have the x-ecuter chip. Yea I thought it might be that but the strange thing is that it has worked for a long time and then the "symptoms" started to appear more and more often...  sad.gif

So, is there a way to tell if it is a "lose" solder?

Just touch all the solder points for a second until they flow slightly.

You will not hurt anything if you touch the solder points for a moment.

Since it was working we know that everything is otherwise ok.

Just do it with care and you'll be alright.

ok, thx I will try  cool.gif

Im a bit affraid that the wire going to the mainboard might loose the gripp and wont stick anymore... Any good advises?  rolleyes.gif

Leave the mainboard wire alone. Tape it down if you can do so WITHOUT moving it!

If you do manage to tape it down ONLY touch the soldering iron to the side connected to the mod chip, not the motherboard.

All you really want to do is heat the solder points of the Mod chip itself.

oh by the way, I saw another one of your post and thought my problem could be related...

Before my xbox didnt want to start at all it somtimes said error 16. I have a vage momory that the problems started when i tried the "ms dashboard" link in evox menu. Could that have something to do with my problem you think?

Now it wont even show an error message, the screen is just black  sad.gif

If when you press the power button you DO NOT see the animation, then the Xbox is not reading the BIOS.

Your mod chip is at fault.

TOUCH UP THE SOLDER JOINTS!

Seriously though, it sounds like your worrying to much. Just a quick dab of the solder iron (1 second or so), and your done. Move on.

If it gets disconnected, then that was too long. Either try resoldering, or pick up the solder with a wick and just start over with the pad
