AFAIK -ALL- Western Digital drives support the security commands.

Are you guys booting from a DOS floppy disk w/o any loaded drivers, etc. including CD, Himem, etc.?

You MUST do so.

BTW: I've locked 5 WD1200DJ's (western digital 120 gig drives) w/o problems.

I also know that all of the WD1200's will lock.

Thanks s_lipowitz and opjose ! BTW I just found a new tool that does it all :

UnLockX.exe Ver 2.0  on http://www.xbxonline.com/

and guess my Western Digital on an Intel MB reports "Unlock" , "Not lockable" .

I guess I will have to try with another PC.

mad.gif

BTW what motherboard/bios did you try it on that failed?

I did the test on 3 PCs already, 2 Dell with Intel motherboard and Dell's bios ... no sucess  and one ASUS (I don't recall the BIOS version) ... no success.

So I'd like to understand the logic of what makes a HD lockable or not lockable blink.gif  . My HD is a Western Digital  Caviar® 7200 hard drive WD800BB very standard.

Thanks

I've had nothing but failure with newer Intel Motherboards such as those for P4's.

I had to go back to an Gigabyte 440BX motherboard to get sucessful locks.

I'll cover this in my guide.

                                    It is.

There was a nice thread on Xboxhacker about this and it was discovered that ALL of the WD drives were lockable.

This was confirmed by Western Digital themselves.

Seagates too.

The big exception was some Maxtor drives.

I have a Maxtor 120gig 5400rpm drive and it is also reporting it as being "unlockable." I put in the original hard drive and it shows as lockable and locked so I dont think it is my motherboard. Im guessing there is no way to get this thing locked? Are there any other 120 gig hard drives that are lockable?

Given that your lockable drive is obviously NOT locked, it's your motherboard or you did not hook it up to the primary IDE connector.

Booting from DOS , no floppy, no CD etc ...

My WD800BB has a minus sign under the S in ATAPWD and my 2 other HDs (Maxtor) have + sign ... this is really weird

Once the harddrive is locked, is it possible to launch the ms dashboard from evox?
