Question... didn't want to start a new thread AND I have searched and read tutorials... just have not found a specific answer to this question...

want to install new hard drive...
Have 2.4 bios flashed...
and new 1.8.2812 dash installed....

now ..
A.  Do I have to zero out first 4096 sectors?  This is a used drive... or do I just have to erase current old PC partitions?

B.  Once I do or do not have to zero drive...  I just install drive...BOOT to new dashboard ON CD?  When are the partitions made... I know how to format through flashfxp  and understand that process fully.. but does evox create the partitions right when it realizes there is nothing on current drive??   I don't get when or how the partitions are made...?

Hope this makes sense.
Probably just easy... insert evox boot cd with new hd installed and then when booted to dashboard .. just fxp and tell it to format partiton so and so ?   Still don't get when the partitions were made

Actually a full zeroing is safer.

The xbox's OS is pretty rudimentary handling the drive, and doesn't deal with existing data very well.

There have been numerous reports of problem where the drive wasn't fully zeroed.

Your milage may vary though.

I fully zeroed a drive for another box... and supposedly the person I sent it to said it  wasn't really all zeroed after opening with hexedit or something...

It took 13 hours for my 80gig.. lol  it had to be doing something...

Anyway ... I don't even understand how to look at the drive and see if it is zeros..

But I guess you need to fully zero if you have used the drive and only the first sectors if it is BRAND NEW?? is this safe to say?  really don't want to zero whole thing again.. of course always just easier to try  smile.gif

I think you could have doen that with the version before with boxplorer or some other file management program.

Try the drive manufacturers tools to do this. They tend to run faster.
And yes the process of installing a new drive isn't quite plain sailing. I saw recursive directories a few times on the E drive for reasons I didn't spend the time to work out.

Does the new bios allow you to copy from the Xbox DVD drive directly to the XBOX harddrive  without having to swap from a PC? Can I now just copy from D: to E: on the Xbox in one step?

From D: to F:\GAMES\xxxPROGRAMxxx Yes!

From D: to E:\   VERY VERY BAAAAD idea!

Go out, rent a game, copy to hard drive, return game.

Rinse, lather and repeat as often as needed.

The drive may not be necessarily zeroed out, even if new. Zeroing is safer.

So it costs you a night of no PC use? If it results in better Xbox reliablity why take shortcuts.

Zeroing out works at a fairly low level, you really wouldn't be able to look at the sectors at this level unless you were using a raw read utility.

E: is a tiny partition (only 4 gigs) that is used for multiple purposes.

It houses your game saves, your music rips, add on content, and other permament game related data.

With a single game install you can easily fill this partition. If you fill the disk many games will not work at all.

By placing games on the same partition you also risk corrupting the partition itself. With the more frequent installs/deletes, etc. this is a problem.

Also remember that the games do not expect to write to the same device that they are running from.

etc.
