Ya and make sure it is a decent dvd drive, because it will not work with all dvd drives, also make sure you set the jumpers right on both drives.

Guys,
Why make him go through replacing the DVD drive? All XBox's read CDRW disc's you just have to try different media if that is the issue.  gerzand, before replacing the HD were you able to boot off of this same DVD drive with CDRW media?

40gb Hd Refuses To Boot On Xbox

Ok. Heres some more info on my problem. Last night i tried a few things. First of all this HD is fully zeroed out.

I burnt 3 different CD-RWs to try: 1) evox .1.8.2 with the default.xbe and evox.ini on it.      2) evox 1.8.2 with only the /Bios folder and default.xbe on it.    3) I burnt the evox 1.8.4 ISO

I then installed the 40gb HD into the xbox. stuck each CD into the drive one at a time, testing the HD in both Mast and Cable Select mode for each CD-RW.

To my FRUSTRATION, none of the cd's worked. I dont know if this plays a role in my problem, but it seems as this is happening during bootup: When the power button is hit after the cd is in the drive and the xbox had been powered off, the HD seems to not be fully booted up (meaning the RPMs are not at full speed) before the Service Screen comes up. This is also the same case with the DVDrom. The drive doesnt seem to hesitate recognizing the disc, but it just cant get set in time before the Service Screen appears. I have tried each disc several time. Is there something I am doing wrong?

I have left as much detailed info as i can think of, but tell me if u need something else

i had this exact same problem. it turns out my CDRW mysteriously went bad after previously working. it took me so damn long to figure out because it didnt make sense.

what i did to solve it was to do a full erase on the CDRW then burn the ISO again.

magically it worked and i was able to install my 40gb drive.

I have a good disc so it is not that. I am just dumbfounded. Oh well, I guess I will do without. All I would use that space for is game saves anyway.
