i believe this is discussed in the forum, but here are some pointers.

Make sure you are using the right cables.
  - Crossover if just pc to xbox
  - Patch (straighthrough) if using a hub/router/switch

If not using a router w/DHCP:
Set static ip to 192.168.0.2 on the xbox, gateway 192.168.0.1
Set ip of PC to 192.168.0.1
